Slide 3 of 22

Notion of personality very old; Human Nature; Implicit (though controversial) is perception that we behave in consistent ways (John is funny, Mary is thoughtful, Bobo is a slob).  Most theoretical perspectives in areas such as clinical, counseling, social, organizational and developmental psychology are at least partly dependent on an understanding of personality and human nature. Much research and argument about the relative importance of personality and situations on behavior (Mischels 1968 text Personality and Assessment was very influential.  Argued that personality is unimportant for predicting behavior.  Caused a big storm). Definitions and discussion on this slide is derived from R Hogans work (socioanalytic theory).  Its the external perspective thats of interest to organizations.  There are many other ways of defining pxy, but this one seems as useful as any for discussing its relevance for work behaviors.
