Materials for Incorporating I-O Into an Introductory Psychology Textbook

Prepared by the Education and Training Committee and the GIT (Getting I-O into Introductory Psychology Textbooks) Task Force of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology

The following materials were created by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) in an effort to produce a standalone I-O chapter and very brief summaries of core I-O content for inclusion within introductory psychology textbooks. Although interest in I-O psychology has grown among students, very few introductory psychology textbooks cover the topic. Therefore, we have designed a boilerplate chapter and 1-page summaries of core content that correspond directly with SIOP’s areas of competence with the exception of Fields of Psychology and History and Systems of Psychology. Additionally, a summary was provided by members of the Humanitarian Work Psychology (HWP), a movement that is using I-O to improve working conditions for workers in all settings.

For each summary, writers were instructed to discuss key theories, findings, and key applications. We also stressed the importance of providing summaries focused on communicating I-O’s useful ideas and major findings. It is our hope that you will incorporate this content in your textbooks so that undergraduate students may gain a broader perspective on our field and the key role we play in shaping human behavior and promoting human flourishing. We also hope that the materials provided will make your job easier. Contact information for the committee and task force is contained within each summary (and chapter) below so that prospective users of the materials may ask any questions about the work.

The summaries were developed by the Education and Training Committee and the GIT task force of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
