South Dakota State University is a land grant institution and the state's largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of over 12,800 students. The Psychology Department at SDSU awards only the baccalaureate degree in psychology. We currently serve 350 majors with 8 full-time faculty members and several adjunct faculty. We anticipate seeking additional faculty members as a result of increasing enrollments.    

SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29.  The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance.  It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.  Both Brookings and Sioux Falls are home to nationally recognized manufacturing and service (financial, health, agricultural) corporations that may provide opportunities for student internships and faculty consulting.  

 

About the Job

 

This tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in Industrial-Organizational (I/O) psychology begins in August 2013. Candidates are sought with a commitment to teaching and the ability to establish an active research program that involves undergraduates. The successful applicant will be or have the potential to become an excellent teacher, promote and supervise undergraduate research, advise psychology majors, develop online teaching skills, and actively engage students in learning with a variety of effective technological teaching methods.  We are especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations.

Responsibilities: Teaching, research and advising undergraduates typically make up 95% of the professional role. Teaching load is typically three courses per semester and will include various combinations of Industrial-Organizational psychology, a laboratory course in I/O, a specialty course in I/O, statistics/research methods, and introductory psychology. An active research program that involves undergraduate students and will produce publications and regional/national presentations is expected. Limited department, college and/or university service is also expected.

 

Job Requirements

 

A Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational psychology or closely related field at the time of appointment is required. Applicants should have experience and interest in teaching undergraduate students using active learning strategies and with the effective use of multi-media technology in the classroom. It is strongly desired that applicants have some kind of grant-writing experience.

The candidate should articulate a commitment to principles of affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity. Effective oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal relations skills, and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching are required.
