FAQs

Question: What is the difference between International Affiliate and Member status regarding membership in SIOP?

Answer: There are only three things that an International Affiliate (and Associate Member, too, for that matter) cannot do that a Member can:

1) vote on SIOP ballot issues and for SIOP officers

2) serve as a SIOP officer

3) serve as a committee chair

Other than those three things, a SIOP International Affiliate may participate fully in SIOP by attending conferences, serving as a member of committees, contributing to TIP and other publications, etc. Dues are the same for all professional members, regardless of member status. International Affiliates of SIOP do not have to meet the requirement for membership in another group (APA, APS, CPA) but must be living and working primarily outside of the U.S.

Question: How long will it take for me to become a SIOP member?

Answer: It usually takes from six to eight weeks for the review of one's application and verification of member status with APA, APS, or CPA. It can take longer, though, if the other required membership (APA, APS, or CPA) is not verifiable as current and of professional status. You are encouraged to apply for membership with one of these organizations concurrently with or even prior to your application to SIOP, as they can take longer. (International Affiliate applicants do not have this requirement.)

Question: When do I have to renew/what is the SIOP dues year?

Answer: If you join prior to February 1st of a year, your dues will be for the current dues year. (The SIOP dues year runs from May 1 to April 30 of each year and renewal notices are sent out each May.) You will be sent the most recent 2 issues of TIP, as well as a directory and any other timely mailings (e.g., conference registration booklet and/or program). If your dues payment comes February 1st or after, it will be applied to the next dues year, so that in effect, you will receive a long dues year. Dues are never prorated, nor is there a late fee, however, renewal payment must be made by the end of August in order for one to be listed in the Membership Directory created each Fall.
