Customize the #SIOP19 Conference Experience

The 34th Annual SIOP Conference, April 4-6, 2019 at the spacious Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington DC/National Harbor will feature new research and best practices on just about every I-O psychology subject, with special emphasis on topics like diversity and inclusion and the future of work that are the focus of attention right now. Researchers, educators, and practitioners from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa gather to network and share experiences with colleagues.

Many attend the SIOP Conference every year, citing the opportunity to connect with friends from around the world while catching up on the latest science and applications as their reason for registering. In addition to the peer-reviewed core of the event, the SIOP Conference Committee works hard to put together extra sessions to meet the specific professional development needs of attendees. The SIOP Consortia, Preconference Workshops, and Friday Seminars are three offerings that can help registrants customize their conference experience, taking it from great to phenomenal.

The four SIOP Consortia have the overarching goal of providing a socialization experience and networking opportunity for graduate students and early career professionals. The consortia will be held from 8 am-5 pm on Wednesday, April 3, and feature a mix of activities and leaders.

There are meetings for masters and doctoral students, as well as for junior faculty and early career practitioners. All the Consortia require preregistration and have limited seating. Some have a nomination requirement for attendance.  The deadline for registration is March 1. Read more about the Consortia here.

The Preconference Workshops are curated by the SIOP Conference Workshop Committee to present authoritative information on diverse I-O psychology topics. Committee Chair Gavan O’Shea said, “The Workshop Committee really tries to have each year’s mix of sessions include (a) topics that reflect critical practice-related I-O issues and challenges, (b) engaging and experienced presenters, and (c) options appropriate for both early-career and more seasoned professionals.”

Dedicated to creating a great experience for attendees, the Workshop Committee has created a flexible format for attendance that mixes networking and learning opportunities.  O’Shea said his favorite part of the effort is, “Encountering the hush that descends on the hallway outside the session rooms at 8:35am on workshop day, when everyone is (hopefully) in the right room and settling in for a terrific professional development experience.”

The 3.5-hour workshops are offered in both morning and afternoon sessions on Wednesday, April 3.  Registrants may choose a full or half day attendance option, to suit their needs. O’Shea shared this advice for those who can attend the full day: “Maybe try picking one session that you know will be directly relevant to your work and your interests, and another that stretches you a bit.”

Workshops offer continuing education credit from APA, SHRM, and HRCI. In addition, Workshop 10 has been approved by HRCI for Business credit.  Learn more about the workshops here, and explore the CE options here.

Friday Seminars offer researchers and practitioners an opportunity to develop new skills, explore new topics, and keep up with cutting-edge advances in research and practice. Invited experts provide thorough discussion of the topics in an interactive learning environment for these 3-hour sessions held on Friday, April 5. Seating is limited to the first 50 registrants. Continuing education credits are available with APA for psychology credit and with SHRM as part of the all-conference program. HRCI has approved Seminars 1, 3, 5, and 6. Seminars 2 and 4 are pending.  Learn more about the seminars here, and explore the CE options here.

The early registration discount offers up to 25% savings on conference attendance and expires on February 20, 2019. Hotel rooms at the Gaylord are also filling up. SIOP has arranged for additional rooms at the Westin Washington National Harbor and the AC Hotel National Harbor Washington. Make your hotel reservations through the SIOP website to receive the conference rate and register early to receive the best rates on your conference attendance.
