 2011 Distinguished Teaching Contributions Award

José M. Cortina, George Mason University

Excellence in teaching and mentorship that has made an impact on hundreds of students characterize Dr. Cortina's nearly 20-year teaching career. He has demonstrated great skill in bringing out the best in students, placing a particular emphasis on critical thinking skills as they apply to various areas of research. His teaching embraces organization, preparation, and engagement and has consistently resulted in near-perfect student ratings. He sets high standards but also provides personal and professional support to help students succeed. For example, students taking his meta-analysis course must agree to continue meeting with him in the summer in order to meet the explicit goal of having their course projects presented at a national conference and eventually published. A good number of those papers have appeared in toptier journals. In 2010, he was awarded the George Mason University Teaching Award, and SIOP recognized him with an Early Career Contributions Award in 2001.
