Group Processes and Intergroup Relations

Special Issue: Leading groups: Leadership as a group process

Leadership can  be characterized as a relationship in which some people are able to influence others to embrace, as their own, new values, attitudes and goals, and to exert effort on behalf of and in pursuit of those values, attitudes and goals. Leadership almost always occurs within a group situation - a small group like a team, a medium sized group like an organization, or a large group like a nation. While most leadership research has focused on properties of the leader, or the dyadic relationship between the leader and follower, increasingly leadership is being seen as essentially a feature of social groups that is firmly grounded in social relations, group life, and the psychology of group membership. This special issue is devoted to assembling a diverse set of publications that examine leadership within the context of the group. We welcome contributions, from social psychologists, organizational scientists and political psychologists, that focus on different types of leaders (such as, organizational, political, religious etc.), use a variety of research methodologies, and consider the multiple levels at which leadership can occur – that essentially view leadership as a group process. Generic themes include, but are not limited to: individual difference factors of the leader and follower (e.g., skills, abilities, personality), group composition and structure (e.g., group size, roles, norms), group development, group processes (e.g., power, conflict, leader-follower relationships, social identity, potency), group outcomes (e.g., psychological well-being, problem-solving, innovation, creativity), and macro-level issues (e.g., intergroup relations, organizational factors, culture).
