The early registration deadline for the 28th annual SIOP conference is quickly approaching. Register by February 18 to save!
The 2013 annual conference, which will take place April 11-13 in Houston, offers an expansive program that includes hundreds of presentations, posters, roundtables, and symposiums; informative workshops and Friday Seminars; several elegant receptions and consortia; and a chance for SIOP members to see old friends and meet new ones while discussing the newest research and news in their field. The annual conference is the highlight of the year for SIOP, and an event you won’t want to miss.

Registration details are also available in our convenient digital registration book located here as well as in the conference program. Attendees registered by the early deadline (February 18) who indicate during the registration process that they wanted to receive the printed program in the mail will receive their copy by mid-March (allow extra time for international deliveries). Individuals registering after the early deadline can pick up a program on site at the conference. If you receive a program in the mail, please remember to bring it with you to the event, as only limited quantities are available. For the quickest access to session information, use the searchable online program and personal scheduler!
You will need a credit card and your SIOP username and password to register. If you don't remember your username and password, just go to the site and have them sent to you via e-mail. Be sure the Administrative Office has your current e-mail address or you won't get the e-mail (contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org). The SIOP registration site is a secure site.

Book Your Room!
After you have registered for the conference, make sure you reserve a place to stay. This year’s conference hotel boasts a spectacular location and lavish amenities. The Hilton Americas - Houston hotel is a AAA Four diamond hotel, conveniently located in the heart of downtown Houston and connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center via two indoor skywalks. The hotel is just steps away from Discovery Green Park, Toyota Center, Dynamo Stadium, Houston Pavilion's premier dining and entertainment center, and Minute Maid Park. Discover the advantages of this downtown Houston hotel and enjoy staying at the official conference hotel that gives you convenient access to all of the conference events so you don’t miss a thing! To ensure you receive the special rate, be sure to book at the SIOP online reservation site. Note: There are very few rooms left at the conference hotel, so do not delay. SIOP has also arranged an official overflow hotel. The Hyatt Regency Houston is an official conference hotel located on Louisiana Street only 0.7 miles from the conference venue, about a 5 minute ride or 15 minute walk. Get There Early
There are several reasons to get to the conference early. SIOP has a number of interactive, informative preconference activities to join, including the preconference workshops, which take place Wednesday, April 10. The Workshop Committee, headed by Liberty Munson, has prepared 12 outstanding workshops for the 2013 conference.
Something NEW for 2013! For the first time, we are offering an opportunity to register for one workshop (either morning or afternoon) at a reduced cost of $300 for members and $485 for non-members. Because workshop attendees find the networking opportunities available during workshops to be one of the most valuable aspects of attending, the registration fee includes lunch as well as the reception. These professional development opportunities include a diverse selection of innovative topics designed to meet the many different needs of SIOP members, and two half-day workshops will earn you 7 CE credits!* (You can earn 3.5 credits for one half-day workshop.) Register early make sure you are able to attend your first-choice workshops!
Early birds to the conference will also have a chance to participate in several consortia: the 7th annual Master’s Consortium, 28th Annual Lee Hakel Doctoral Consortium, and the 8th annual Junior Faculty Consortium. Receptions and Plenary Sessions
Elegant receptionsare available for many different interestsat the conference. Program Chair Eden King and Membership Chair Mo Wang invite all new SIOP members, first-time conference attendees, and Ambassador–Newcomer pairs to attend The Newcomers’ reception, with a short presentation entitled “How to Get the Most from the SIOP Conference.” This session is held at 5:30. It will start with a short introduction to the conference with many helpful tips and pointers and will be followed with some great networking and mingling opportunities (accompanied by some appetizers and cocktails!). This is an excellent way to meet other new people at the start of your SIOP conference adventure as well as to meet some seasoned SIOP leaders who will be there to welcome you. Also be sure to kick off the eve of your conference right at the all-conference welcome reception. Reunite with your conference pals and make some new ones. The conference will officially kick off with the all-conference opening plenary session on Thursday morning, April 11. After a brief welcome message from Conference Chair Robin Cohen, the announcement of award winners (Awards Chair Leaetta Hough), and the new Fellows (Fellows Chair Jerry Hedge), SIOP’s President-Elect Tammy Allen will introduce SIOP President Doug Reynolds. Doug’s presidential address is sure to inspire us as we kick-off our 28th conference.
A Top-Notch Program
Of course the highlight of the SIOP conference is its program.SIOP had more than1,400 submissions this year. In addition to the vast number of peer-reviewed sessions, Program Chair Eden King and her many subcommittees have put together an amazing array of special sessions. A few of the key highlights include:
Networking and Job Search
Ample networking opportunities are also available at the conference. Coffee breaks and receptions (such as the general, International, CEMA, and LGBT and Allies receptions) offer time to connect with new friends and colleagues or reconnect with old ones. There will also be a wi-fi lounge, multiple sitting areas, and plenty of space for meeting up with friends and colleagues. In addition, some special activities to promote networking are being planned. SIOP will also continue its Conference Ambassador Program this year, which will informally match new SIOP conference attendees (“Newcomers”) with seasoned SIOP conference attendees (“Ambassadors”) to help connect the newcomer and provide a better overall conference experience for all.
The Placement Center will also be available as a one-of-a kind resource to connect I-O psychologists seeking employment opportunities with hiring employers. Employers can meet with job seekers in our center or use the center to arrange an off-site interview. The center is equipped with IT resources and is specifically reserved for placement center registrants. Adam Hilliard and Matt O’Connell manage this year’s placement activities, with registration and preconference matching opening prior to the conference and on-site services provided from April 10-13.
Volunteering, Activities, and Tourism
This year, the local arrangements team, headed by Irene Sasaki, has put together two pre-conference tours, to take place Wednesday, April 10, that offer an educational and exciting look at various aspects of the Houston area:
- Port of Houston Boat Tour
- Saint Arnold Brewery Tour
If you can’t make the tours, there is still plenty to do in the Houston area before, during, and after the conference, and the local arrangements team will make sure you are well prepared with a summary of ideas that you will receive in your conference bag.
Join race director Paul Sackett and local coordinator Mikki Hebl early on Saturday, April 13, for the Frank Landy 5K Fun Run. The course will be a circuit of the Rice University campus, which is a 10–15 minute trip by light rail from the conference hotel. Participants will meet in the lobby of the hotel at 6:15, and will travel as a group to Rice for a 7:00am start. The race fee is $25, which includes a t-shirt. You can register online as you register for the conference. You can also register at the conference, but it would help greatly with race planning (and t-shirt ordering) if you registered in advance.
For the closing plenary on Saturday, SIOP is pleased to present closing keynote speaker Reverend TJ Martinez, Founding President, Cristo Rey Jesuit College Prep of Houston. Father Martinez entered the Jesuit seminary after receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston College. He has also earned five graduate degrees including a law degree from the University of Texas and a school leadership degree from Harvard University. Father Martinez was honored with the 2008 Intellectual Contribution & Faculty Tribute Award and was selected to deliver the Harvard Graduate School of Education Commencement address. He returned to Texas to found the newest Jesuit college preparatory school in the country—Cristo Rey Jesuit College Prep of Houston—an innovative work–study high school program that targets the poorest children in the city, getting them off the streets and into college in 4 years. In 2012, Paper City magazine named Father Martinez one of four New Influencers in Houston, and in 2013 he will receive the Phi Beta Kappa Outstanding Contribution to Education in Houston Award.
During the closing plenary, President Reynolds will hand over the official SIOP gavel to our incoming president, Tammy Allen, who will then give us an overview of her goals and vision for her presidency. The closing reception following the closing plenary will be an event that you will not want to miss. All are welcome and encouraged to join us in sending this conference out on a high note. You don’t want to miss this!
