Great Ideas Will Emerge From This Year’s LEC

Having the right leadership talent can make the difference between an organization’s success or failure. That is why so many businesses are giving strong attention to talent management strategies that enable them to hire, develop, engage, and retain the leaders they need to help achieve business objectives.

What are the best strategies to do this?

SIOP is sponsoring its 9th Annual Leading Edge Consortium, which will provide some answers. Titled “Building Future Leaders: Innovations and Trends in Talent Management,” the LEC will be held October 18-19 at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond, VA.

The consortium will feature top leadership and talent management experts who will share proven strategies as well as lessons learned from talent programs that didn’t work quite as well as expected.

“This consortium is targeted at practitioners, especially senior-level people who are responsible for leadership and talent programs for their company or consulting firm,” said LEC chair Jeff McHenry, Principal, Rainier Leadership Solutions in Seattle, WA.

To offer a consortium that would attract HR leaders and practitioners, planners conducted some formal research as well as interviews to learn about current talent management issues and practices.

The bottom line? Practitioners are looking for fresh ideas to bring back to their organizations.

“Those attending will hear a lot of new ideas they can customize and adapt in their own organizations. Everyone will leave with two or three great ideas they can use,” he said.

The LEC program committee is composed of people in senior leadership and talent roles in world-class organizations who have worked hard to put together a program that will be attractive to leadership and talent leadership practitioners.

McHenry said what separates the LEC from other leadership programs is that attendees will hear presentations grounded in science. “This will be a premier forum for sharing ideas and practices that are evidence based,” he said.

“Lightning rounds” will be a new format introduced at this year’s LEC as a complement the keynotes, panels, and presentations. In each lightning round, three or four people will take 5 minutes to highlight a best practice from their organization. “The lightning rounds are designed to provide attendees with a lot of creative ideas they can take back to their office and adapt for their own organization,” McHenry said. Lots of break and networking time is built into the conference so that attendees can follow-up with speakers to learn more about the practices that interest them.

Dave Nershi, SIOP’s Executive Director, said “This will be one of the strongest LECs SIOP has offered. “Leadership development is a core I-O topic and the people who will be attending perform similar functions at their companies, so everyone will have something in common. The networking opportunities are a great benefit of the LEC,” he said.

SIOP members are urged to invite people in their organizations and others they know, especially practitioners who are not I-Os and who are involved in leadership development. “We want them to be exposed to what SIOP has to offer. Our goal is to advance the state of the art in leadership practice as informed by science,” McHenry said.
