SIOP Committees Release New White Papers

SIOP’s Visibility and International Affairs committees recently released three new white papers. The following white papers are now available on the white paper page on the SIOP website:

Want More Effective Managers? Learning Agility May Be the Key,” written by Caitlin Cavanaugh and Alexandra Zelin, University of Akron.

Although it is believed that a manager's success is best predicted by previous performance, recent research illustrates that learning agility may be a better predictor of manager success. This white paper provides an overview of earning agility, including its characteristics, history, implications, and the next steps for using learning agility in to identify people who are more likely to be successful in manager roles.

 

 

Workplace Bullying: Causes, Consequences, and Intervention Strategies,” written by M. Sandy Hershcovis, University of Manitoba; Tara C. Reich, London School of Economics and Political Science; and Karen Niven, University of Manchester.

Workplace bullying is detrimental to employees and organizations, yet in a meta-analytic review of studies representing a range of countries (North America, Scandinavian, and other European) approximately 15% of employees report being victimized at work (Nielsen, Matthiesen, & Einarsen, 2010). This white paper examines type sof bullying, causes, and consequences, as well as offers interventions and practical reccommendaitons for organizations and employees. 

 

Getting Engaged: Top Tips for an Engaged Workforce,” written by Allison S. Gabriel and Andrew A. Bennett, Virginia Commonwealth University.

In today’s dynamic and turbulent organizations, many top management executives are becoming increasingly concerned with having a workforce that is invigorated and excited about their work on a day-to-day basis. The importance of work engagement for organizations means that individuals at all levels of the organization need to understand what engagement is and how to foster it daily. This white paper discusses employee work engagement, or the dedication, energy, and absorption that employees feel at work. The authors provide an overview of this topic and explicate what managers can do to improve engagement in their workplace.
