For her contributions to the field of psychology, Judith Blanton was awarded a 2015 Presidential Citation at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA) held last month in Toronto.

Blanton was honored for her “tireless work on behalf of applied and clinical psychologists,” including her “superlative career in consulting psychology.” The citation noted her career has “fueled broad perspective on forging needed change where regulators, legislators, and peers may not appreciate the need for change” That career has included contributions to the APA Model Practice Act and  efforts to raise awareness of the needs of I-O and consulting psychologists with the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. She is a licensed psychologist and an advocate for making licensure for I-O and consulting psychologists more reasonable and accessible.

“I was surprised, humbled, and deeply honored to receive this award,” Blanton said. “Psychology is more than a health service profession, and we I-O psychologists need to continue our efforts to raise awareness about our unique needs and concerns both within APA and with licensing boards.”

She currently heads Blanton Consulting in Pasadena, CA, working with individuals, teams, and organizations developing and implementing strategies to support their business objectives. Part of her practice provides “consulting to consultants,” helping both beginning and experienced organizational consultants become more effective.

“Judy is the coach’s coach,” the APA citation stated. ”She is able to frame the most difficult messages in ways that clients and colleagues can hear and act upon positively. As such, Judy Blanton is a role model’s role model.”

Prior to founding her own firm in 2010, Blanton was a partner with the consulting firm of RHR International LLC, retiring after 22 years.

She has served as a chair of the State Affairs Committee for SIOP and was a contributing columnist for TIP for several years. The California Psychological Association presented her with a Distinguished Service Award in I-O and Consulting in 2010.

Blanton is an APA Fellow and a past president of APA’s Division of Consulting Psychology where she was the recipient of its Outstanding Service Award in 2005.
