Flexible Tools for Conference Planning

Whether you’re more comfortable working online or on paper, SIOP offers a number of tools to help you plan for getting the most out of the 2016 Annual Conference in Anaheim, California.

Printed publications include the comprehensive, 192-page conference program and the highly portable 12-page conference program summary. Once you plan your conference with the program, you can carry the program summary for a lightweight, quick reference guide.

Conference attendees who registered by the early bird deadline and elected to have the program mailed should have received the program. Other conference attendees can pick up the full program and the program summary at registration. A printable version of the program is also available for download in the conference section of the SIOP website.

Online publications follow a similar model.  The website planner, available in my.siop, has a wealth of features to facilitate your planning, including the ability to search the program in a variety of ways, to add notes to calendar entries, to make your schedule public or private, to see other attendees’ public schedules, and to delete sessions if you change your plans.

The mobile planner, tied to the desktop application, has lower functionality but does include the ability to search the program and to view your plan and the #SIOP16 Twitter stream. It also has pages listing exhibitors, activities by category, and the hours of several conference features. Plan your schedule on the desktop to take advantage of the application’s extended feature set, then carry the information on your phone or tablet.

The opening pages of the program provide a collection of useful information, including directions from regional airports, a listing of conference partners, the 1-page list of hours and special events on page 5, and an informative welcome letter from Conference Chair Eden King and Program Chair Scott Tonidandel. Complete descriptions of the conference sessions make up the bulk of the program.  They’re organized in ascending numeric order, with posters listed by session and then placement in the hall (e.g., 24-8).

Listings for each day of the conference begin with a handy 2-page schedule grid, followed by a subject index for the day’s sessions. The back of the program has topic and presenter indices, along with maps of the hotel, convention center, and surrounding area.
The conference summary recaps the convention hours, the daily schedule grids, partner and exhibitor listings, and the maps.

In addition to all of these tools, the Education and Training Committee, chaired by Joe Allen, has prepared a one-page synopsis of activities they deem to be particularly of interest for graduate students, which can be accessed and downloaded here.
