SIOP Welcomes New TIP Editor

Behrend to Continue Digital Evolution and Promote Readership

For the next three years, the editorship of SIOP’s quarterly publication The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist (TIP) will be under the capable leadership of Tara Behrend. She is succeeding Morrie Mullins, who guided TIP from print to digital.

An associate professor of industrial and organizational psychology at George Washington University, Behrend brings to her new assignment experience as a past TIP columnist and editorial board member. She has also been active on various SIOP committees, including Awards, Education and Training, APA Program, and SIOP Program.

“I have always valued and enjoyed reading TIP and the way it offers members the ability to communicate with each other,” Behrend said. “I believe in TIP as a venue for information sharing and open access to information. I wanted to be a part of this effort, to support it, and to contribute.”

One of the most important roles of being editor is assuring high-quality content that will be meaningful to readers, which means commissioning and soliciting articles. Behrend is not wasting time in that regard.

“I am connecting with people who have research and ideas to share and am encouraging them to consider doing an article for TIP,” she said. “I am excited about the material that people have been sending me so far.”

“I want SIOP to be open and transparent and believe knowledge should be shared. I would like to make TIP an essential publication that SIOP members will want to read cover to cover,” she added.

When Behrend saw that applications were being accepted for the editor’s position, she immediately applied.

“I met with the selection committee (Deb Rupp, Alex Alonso, and Mullins) and participated in a structured interview and completed a work sample test, which included reviewing an article.”

Mullins was impressed. 

“We had great candidates, but Tara really stood out.  Her experience within SIOP and her vision for what TIP could become, as it continues its digital evolution, made it clear she was the right person for the job. I know some of the changes she’s planning and have met some of the members of the TIP team she’s bringing on-board, and I really look forward to TIP under her leadership,” he said.

One new column will be “Lost in Translation,” which will share strategies and stories about how SIOP members promote the field of I-O and communicate its value, which is a continuing goal of SIOP. The writers will be Mike Litano and Andrew Collmus, both doctoral candidates at Old Dominion University.

Another new column will be “Crash Course in I-O Technology.” Richard Landers, an associate professor at Old Dominion, will be offering tutorials and explanations of common technologies I-O psychologists encounter in their work with the goal of demystifying the tools and suggesting resources for further exploration.

Of course, many of the columnists TIP readers have enjoyed will continue to contribute.

“Nevertheless, columnists and authors do change over the years and that’s a reflection of membership and SIOP priorities, which drive a lot of the content,” Behrend said.

SIOP members’ reaction to the change from print to digital has been mixed, according to both Mullins and Behrend.  “We will be using analytics to tell us how people are using TIP and learn how we can grow its digital readership. We will be reaching out to members to tell us what they want to see in TIP and how we can produce a better product that is both interesting and useful to them,” she said.

“That’s one of the real challenges this early in the digital format. Like all change, people will adapt but in the meantime we have to make it as user friendly as we can. Promoting TIP is going to be an ongoing process,” she said.

Behrend said being editor is not a “one woman show” and she will be relying heavily on a lot of people including columnists, authors and peer reviewers. She is encouraging SIOP members to read TIP and let her know their thoughts.

She also acknowledged the support provided by the SIOP Administrative Office. Communications Specialist Barbara Ruland promotes articles with links by posting “Have you read…” weekly on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Publications Manager Jen Baker does all the formatting and proofreading then returns it to Behrend for final review before Baker posts it for all to read.

Baker and Behrend have already begun work on some additional functionality and visual changes for digital TIP, which they hope will be in place in the coming months.
