12th Annual Leading Edge Consortium Draws Record Attendance

“Talent Analytics” Explores How Data Technology Is Changing Workforce Management

The 2016 Leading Edge Consortium (LEC), “Talent Analytics: Data Science to Drive People Decisions and Business Impact” addressed one of the foundational challenges affecting organizations today, the application of data science to workforce management.

A record-setting 274 attendees from throughout the US and from as far away as Singapore, Japan, and Lebanon heard presentations from two dozen experts on different aspects of the evolving uses of data in human capital management.

 

The LEC Organizing Committee, chaired by Alexis Fink, divided the presentations into five conceptual groups. The program also featured two keynote presentations, one each on Friday and Saturday morning. Committee members included Rick Guzzo, Hailey Herleman, Fred Oswald, Evan Sinar, and Scott Tonidandel.

Expert speakers represented such leading organizations as Eli Lilly & Co., GE, IBM, and Johnson & Johnson. Thought leaders from the US General Services Administration and the EEOC, along with independent consultants and researchers from several universities also participated. The consortium was held at the Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta. With its many restaurants, upscale shopping, temperate climate, and easily accessible public transportation, the chic urban Buckhead neighborhood provided ample diversions for LEC attendees to sample when not engaged in the sessions.

Attendees who arrived on Thursday were treated to a welcome reception, presented by SHAKER, that featured a premium brand open bar and southern favorites like fried green tomatoes and Coca-Cola glazed ham.

Friday’s sessions began with brief remarks by Chair Alexis Fink. Then Joe Vance, presenting partner Echospan’s general manager, introduced keynote speaker Alan Wild of IBM, who pointed out that “nothing travels farther and faster than a tweet containing bad news” in his presentation, “Managing Employee Engagement in a Social World.”

Eden King began her presentation “Contextualizing the Conversation: Three Big Questions About Data” with the advice to “keep calm and ask questions.” The remainder of the morning was devoted to analytics collection methods, with presentations by Sherie Apungu, Allen Kamin and Jeffrey Saltz.

At Friday’s luncheon, Joe Jones, SHRM’s Director for HR Competencies and Resources Research, and SIOP President Mort McPhail joined SIOP Foundation Board Secretary and past SIOP president Nancy Tippins, in presenting the 2016 HRM Impact Award to Jack in the Box, Inc. To close Friday’s lunch, President McPhail recognized members of the newly created Sterling Circle, a designation honoring SIOP members of 25 years or more. After the luncheon, organizing committee member Herleman and her colleague Jackie Ryan wrapped up the data collection section with a look at “Big Data platforms for Workforce Analytics,” SIOP’s immediate past president, Steve Kozlowski, inspired the audience with his glimpse into the future, “Big Data and Computational Organizational Science: A Peek On and Over the Horizon,” as part of the section on analysis methods.  Aman Alexander, Mark Van Buren and Ben Taylor also presented in this section.

Evan Sinar arranged Friday’s final coverage section, on results methods. Jennifer Burnett, Richard Landers and Paul Tsagaroulis joined him in presenting information.

Attendees at the optional Friday Night Networking Experience, presented by Quintela.io, sampled four sparkling wines paired with uniquely prepared bacon at the City Club of Buckhead. Located on the 18th floor of the Atlanta Financial Center, the City Club event offered ample opportunities for networking in a sumptuous environment surrounded by striking views of the city. SIOP Executive Director Dave Nershi gave a demonstration of “champagne sabering” before Joel Quintela pulled Paul Edelman’s number in the drawing for a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.

Attendees also made the most of networking opportunities at the buffet breakfasts presented by Talent Quarterly, the coffee breaks presented by HumRRO, and the Saturday luncheon presented by Data Solutions International.

Saturday’s sessions began with a keynote address by Dan Putka, “Big Data Mythbusters: Benefiting from Big Data Analytic Methods with Your Small Data.” Sara Roberts delivered the final section on results methods before the morning break.

Presentations on analytics teams by Adam Myer, Alexis Fink and Nathan Mondragon led up to the final session. Rick Guzzo moderated the panel discussion on “Risks, Privacy, and Ethical Challenges in Big Data Talent Analytics.” It brought together experts from diverse disciplines and gave audience members ample opportunity for interaction. Participants included Ed Freeman, a distinguished philosopher, mathematician and economist, and SIOP members Eric Dunleavy and Rich Tonowski.

After thanking the LEC committee and giving attendees final reminders, LEC Chair Fink thanked attendees for their participation and welcomed them to join SIOP again for next year’s event.

The 2017 Leading Edge Consortium, on the topic of executive coaching, will be held October 13-14, 2017 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
