Jeffrey R. Hughes to Begin Transition at Administrative Office February 1
SIOP President Mort McPhail has announced that after a long and thorough search and evaluation process, Jeffrey R. Hughes has accepted an offer to become the next executive director of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).
Hughes is replacing current Executive Director David Nershi, who will retire May 1, 2017.
“I am very excited to assume the role of Executive Director of SIOP,” Hughes said. “Given the organization’s rich history of meeting and exceeding members’ needs, I am honored to take over the organizational reins from Dave Nershi and to begin work with his Administrative Office team who, for the last 11 years, have built high-quality member service and have demonstrated consistent resourcefulness in enhancing the membership experience.”
Hughes will begin working full-time February 1, 2017 in the SIOP Administrative Office, located in Bowling Green, OH. This will allow him several months to work with Nershi and the administrative staff as they prepare for the SIOP Annual Conference next April.
“At the annual conference in Orlando, I look forward eagerly to getting to hear firsthand what’s on members’ minds about the association and what the very resourceful volunteers and seasoned staff can do to respond to and deliver even more contemporary benefits, relevant member experiences, and top-quality resources so members feel increasing value in their SIOP membership,” he added.
Hughes is a seasoned association executive officer who has served as CEO and president for two nonprofit organizations, most recently the Industrial Supply Association and prior to that GAMA International. He is wholly committed to and has consistently demonstrated an ability to provide members with research-based, relevant, and innovative benefits and services and timely, two-way communication.
“We are very excited to start this new chapter at SIOP and look forward to working closely with Jeff in the coming years,” President McPhail said.
Service to others has been the thread of passion and purpose throughout Hughes’ employment history and personal life. Before his association career, Hughes served in executive leadership roles in the design, development, delivery, and implementation of competency-based leadership and sales associate professional development in the insurance and financial services industry.
He began his working life in the food services and restaurant management sector of the hospitality industry. He completed his career in the financial services sector as assistant vice president and learning officer for AXA Equitable/The MONY Group.
Hughes is a graduate of Syracuse University where he majored in personnel-industrial relations, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the university's School of Management. He had subsequent graduate studies in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration at Cornell.
Before moving to the Toledo, OH area, Hughes lived in Central Florida with his wife Cynthia where they had the benefit of spending many happy hours together with their three grandsons who lived nearby. Both Hughes and his wife’s roots are founded in eastern Pennsylvania.
The director search process was led by Bill Macey and Fred Oswald, with the help of Search Advisory Committee members Tammy Allen, Milt Hakel, Ann Marie Ryan, Neal Schmitt, and Nancy Tippins.
