Theme Parks and Fun Runs and T Shirts, Oh My!

Additional Activities to Enrich Your SIOP Conference Experience

With nearly 700 approved presentations, it would be possible to spend all your time at the SIOP 2017 Conference inside a meeting room.  But that would be a shame.

There are many opportunities to enrich your conference experience through recreation and networking activities!

The 25th Frank Landy 5K Fun Run, scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Friday, April 28, will give participants a scenic tour of the Disney resort property.  According to organizer Paul Sackett, this year’s course is as close to ideal as you’re going to get. See the course here.

To date, 166 veteran racers and newcomers have signed up for the event, which Sackett calls “a nice contrast to the rest of the conference activities.” Because of the early start and convenient route, participants will have plenty of time to return to Friday’s conference sessions with renewed energy.

The Frank Landy 5K Fun Run welcomes participants at all levels and encourages team entries. There’s a 4-person team category and several 2-person categories, including advisor-advisee, mixed-doubles, and scientist-practitioner.

Race participants get a souvenir SIOP 2017 T-shirt, and registration for the race can be added to your conference registration at any time. Learn more about the race here.

This year, the SIOP LGBT Committee is also offering the “Love is love” T-shirt for $20 in support of the Dru Project, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit started in honor of a victim of the Pulse shooting who was also an APA member.  The shirt may be ordered with your conference registration or added to your registration later.

Limited quantities and sizes of both t- shirts will also be available on site. Reserve your shirt by March 24 to assure you get the proper size.

Orlando bills itself as the “Theme Park Capital of the World,” and SIOP wants to help you experience this unique conference destination! SIOP has arranged for discount entry tickets for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Find out more about these offers and about Orlando tourism resources here.

If you would rather relax at the hotel than a theme park, numerous conference receptions are scheduled each evening, Wednesday through Saturday to provide opportunities for building your professional networking and reconnecting with old friends. See an overview of the receptions here, and be sure to add those you wish to attend to your personal schedule on the Whova conference app. Whova download and use information can be found here.
