New Year’s Resolutions to Help You Make the Most of Your I-O Career

As most of us get back to our regular routines after the holidays, many industrial-organizational psychologists are looking forward to a promising new year—complete with resolutions.

The new year offers a chance to develop yourself professionally, so make sure you start 2018 off right by making a New Year’s resolution to advance your career and the field of industrial-organizational psychology! Below are SIOP’s tips for following through on your professional New Year’s resolutions.

Advance your career by making plans to:

  • Attend the 33rd Annual SIOP Conference - The 2018 SIOP Annual Conference will be held in Chicago April 19-21, with workshops April 18. The culminating event of the year for SIOP members offers an expansive program that includes hundreds of presentations, posters, and special sessions; informative workshops and Friday seminars; several elegant receptions and consortia; and a chance for SIOP members to see old friends and meet new ones while discussing the newest research and news in their field. Register today and join us in Chicago for a stimulating and exciting event!
  • Update your my.SIOP profile -Your my.SIOP profile is the most powerful tool you have to promote yourself through SIOP. The information you include in your profile is the information other members will use to find you in the SIOP Member Directory. Don’t be the person with the empty profile! Login to the SIOP website and visit your my.SIOP profile to take charge of your professional persona by filling in your complete biography and adding a profile photo.
  • Ensure you are receiving all your member benefits, including publications, by updating your contact and professional information as well.
  • Participate in SIOP Directories and Registries - After updating your my.SIOP profile, consider participating in SIOP’s optional directories and registries. All SIOP members are listed in the SIOP Membership Directory, but SIOP professional members may also opt in to other directories and registries, such as Media Resources, registries, and Consultant Locator Service. (These directories can also be found by clicking on the “Find and I-O Psychologist” link on the SIOP homepage!) Participation in SIOP directories and registries is controlled by you through controls in your my.SIOP account. To help others find you, be sure to include your up-to-date name, employer, interest areas, services, and contact information as well as a photo. Learn more here.
  • Subscribe to the SIOP Research Access Service - This service makes three EBSCO Host research databases—Business Source Corporate, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, and SocIndex—as well as the SIOP Learning Center available to SIOP members. The EBSCO databases feature thousands of publications, including most that are highly sought after by SIOP's members. The Learning Center features access to hundreds of audio and video files from previous SIOP Annual Conferences and Leading Edge Consortia. Brush up on your I-O research with an all-access pass to the SIOP Research Access service!
  • Mark your calendar for the 2018 Leading Edge Consortium - The 14th Annual Leading Edge Consortium, on the topic of high potential talent, will be held October 19-20, with Preconsortium Workshops on October 18, at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel. The event will be co-chaired by Rob Silzer and Allan Church. The LEC gives attendees ample opportunities for networking, discussion, and active learning. Take the time to meet people who are interested and working on the same topic you are, share advice and experiences, and learn from the leaders in the field of high-potential talent—mark your calendar for the 2018 LEC!
