APA Division 44 (Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity) Awards Deadline March 30

Division 44, Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, has various awards to bestow on those who have or are likely to support LGBT individuals and communities. Please consider nominating yourself or someone deserving of any award, as well as sharing this information with anyone who might be interested.

One need not be a member of Division 44 or of APA to be nominated. Below is a listing of the awards, sorted by whether they target professionals or students. The order of presentation of each award on Division’s 44 APA website is identified by the number preceding the award. Details about each of the 18 awards, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, are available here.

The applications for all awards are due on March 30, 2018.

Professional Awards

  1. Evelyn Hooker Award for Distinguished Contribution by an Ally.
    Acknowledges an ally who has supported Division 44’s mission.
  2. Distinguished Contribution to Education and Training.
    Recognizes colleagues who have made distinguished contributions to the interests, goals, and purposes of Division 44 in the area of education, either academic or public.
  3. Distinguished Contribution to Ethnic Minority Issues.
    Recognizes distinguished contributions to the interests, goals, and purposes of Division 44 in the area of ethnic minority LGBT psychology.
  4. Division 44 Presidential Citation.
    Conferred by the president of Division 44 on an individual or organization whose mission and work are consistent with the president’s theme or focus.
  5. Distinguished Book Award.
    Recognizes a book that has made a significant contribution to the field of LGBT psychology.
  6. Certification of Appreciation.
    Provides an opportunity for the division to formally note its appreciation to individuals who have provided significant service to the division.
  7. Distinguished Service Award.
    The Division offers this award for distinguished contributions to Division 44 through exceptional service.
  8. Distinguished Professional Contribution.
    Recognizes distinguished professional contributions advancing the interests, goals, and purposes of Division 44.
  9. Distinguished Scientific Contribution.
    Honors distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to LGBT psychological issues.
  10. Clarity Award.
    Recognizes leaders advancing the rights of LGBT people, engage others within our profession to extend recognition and respect for LGBT people, and advocate for equality for LGBT people.

Student and Early Career Psychologist

  1. Student and Early Career Psychologist Engagement Award.
    Supports early career psychologist and graduate student engagement with LGBTQ psychology by defraying travel costs to the APA annual convention and research travel awards (nine total awards).
  2. Transgender Research Award.
    Honors research that makes a notable contribution to the understanding, health, and well-being of transgender people and gender diversity in society.

Student Awards

  1. Dr. Richard A. Rodriquez Division 44 Student Travel Award.
    Supports engagement with LGBT people of color issues in psychology by defraying travel costs to the APA annual convention.
  2. Mentoring Student Travel Award.
    Supports graduate student engagement with LGBTQ psychology by defraying travel costs to the APA annual convention.
  3. Distinguished Student Contribution.
    Honors a graduate student in psychology who has made a distinguished contribution to research or practice, or who has performed exceptional service to the division.
  4. Committee on Bisexual Issues Student Travel Award.
    The Committee bestows a $500 travel grant for graduate students to engage with LGBTQ psychology by traveling to the APA annual convention.
  5. Bisexual Foundation Scholarship Award.
    Awards up to $1000 per award to select graduate students to advance research on the psychology of bisexuality.
  6. Malyon Smith Scholarship Research Award.
    Honors graduate students in psychology for research into psychological issues of importance to LGBT individuals, groups, or communities.
