Sheldon Zedeck Wins 2011 Israel Organizational Behavior Conference Award
SIOP Fellow and Past President Sheldon Zedeck, professor of psychology (emeritus) at the University of California – Berkeley, has been awarded the 2011 Israel Organizational Behavior Conference (IOBC) Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award will be granted in December during a special reception at the first Israel Organizational Behavior Conference at the Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration at Tel-Aviv University, Israel.
The IOBC, to take place December 21-22, 2011 on the topic of "Relational Issues in Management," will offer a unique opportunity to present innovative ideas and explore recent developments on "relational" issues in management. The conference, sponsored by the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management (AoM), will also be an opportunity to share work in progress, receive feedback, and interact with leading scholars in the field with the hope of forging fruitful collaborations. “Professor Sheldon Zedeck is supremely deserving of this award,” stated the IOBC Organizing Committee.
According to the committee, Zedeck is uniquely deserving of the award because “he has brought to the fields of organizational behavior and industrial and organizational psychology a special combination of prowess and innovation in research, research methods, and application.”
Zedeck has made steadfast effort to develop and apply tools to maximize well-being in and of organizations, IOBC explained.
“He has held the top posts in the field,” according to the conference committee. “He served as editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology, the field’s premier outlet for micro-organizational behavior research. He co-founded and edited Human Performance. He was associate editor of Applied Psychology: An International Review. He served on the editorial board of SIOP’s path-blazing Organizational Frontiers Series and on the boards of many journals Recently, APA published the 3-volume Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (2010), for which Zedeck was editor-in-chief.”
Zedeck was president of SIOP 1986-87 and was central to the successful effort in moving Division 14 of the American Psychological Association (APA) to an autonomous entity without severing its organizational and disciplinary roots in APA. In recognition of his career-long commitment and dedicated service, he was honored with SIOP’s Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He has also contributed to a variety of committees and programs for the Academy of Management and has served on the executive board of the Society for (Research on) Organizational Behavior (SOB).
Over the years, Zedeck has partnered with literally dozens of the field’s leading scholars, has mentored many students who have emerged as top contributors to the field, and has rendered fruitful service to his university, including serving as chair of the psychology department and vice provost for Faculty Welfare and Academic Affairs for the campus. Upon his retirement in December 2010, he received the Berkeley Citation in recognition of his research, teaching, and service contributions to the campus. Furthermore, he has spent sabbatical time in several nations in Europe and Asia, including at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at the Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration at Tel Aviv University.
“Zedeck combines research and practice by working in real settings, thus providing a service to the host organizations and contributions to the scientific literature,” according to IOBC, citing the fact that he has made many important contributions to our knowledge about motivation, consumer decision processes, work and family, workplace health and well-being; research design; test theory; psychological measurement of any kind, including BARS, multitrait-multirater analysis, assessment centers, and rater policy capturing; and statistics applied to testing and personnel selection including regression, moderator analysis, performance appraisals, and judgment analysis.
“Above all, he has been on a lifetime quest to maximize fairness and workplace diversity. Be it in studying behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS), rater policy capturing, improved testing standards, or banding, his passion is to assure every individual the opportunity to develop his or her abilities.”
