What I-O Can Bring to HR

Visibility Committee Launches Business-Oriented Resource on SIOP.org 


Most I-O psychologists at one time or another have been asked, “What is I-O?”
 
SIOP Member Cathie Murensky said she has encountered the problem, doubting at times if her own relatives or non-I-O friends have a clue about her degree or skill set. The problem, she said, is clear for many I-O psychologists, as she said she has even seen discussions on social networking websites such as a LinkedIn I-O group that is tackling this same question.
 
To help alleviate this frustration and provide fellow SIOP members a response to that inevitable question, the SIOP Visibility Committee has recently developed a new resource for marketing the contribution of I-O psychologists. The newly revised Professionals tab on the SIOP website provides an overview of the wide variety of services I-Os can provide to organizations.
 
“The visibility committee members had each encountered the same frustration with the interpretation and understanding of the field of I-O,” explained Murensky, principal at InnoVision International and member of the visibility committee’s HR/business subcommittee, which led the website improvements. Other subcommittee members who worked on the project included Lisa Roberts, Emily Solberg, Megan Leasher, Carl Persing, Ken Lahti, and Christine Corbet.
 
“We also thought that if we wanted to engage non I-O professionals, we should increase their awareness of not only what I-O is, but the many ways an I-O psychologist can support the HRD function throughout an employee’s lifecycle with an organization," Murensky added.
 
The improved page is organized into two columns, one containing the previous information for individual professionals, the other with new information geared toward organizations and businesses. This information is organized into five the stages of the employee lifecycle (e.g., selection systems, performance management, etc.), Muresnky explained, and within each section committee members have created a description of the process in layman's terms, as well as specific examples of how an I-O psychologist's contribution could add value to an organization.
 
Each section is rounded out by a sample case study that links I-O work to bottom line business performance. Readers may click on either the title listed under “For Organizations” or the section of the graphic that depicts the stage of the lifecycle that interests you.
 
The improved Professionals tab is available for access by non-members, and the visibility committee encourages SIOP members to share it with current or future clients or leaders within your organization to increase the understanding of the unique contribution I-O psychologists can provide.
 
“The enhanced Professionals tab is targeted not only to the SIOP community but all business and non I-O professionals who may benefit from—and use—our professional capability, such as HR business partners, academics, business leaders, educators, and anyone who is engaged in HRD-related activities,” Murensky said.
 
Murensky said she believes spreading the word about resources such as this will help I-O psychologists show organizations how useful they can be to business.
 
“This type of marketing will enhance the overall awareness of what someone with expertise in I-O can bring to the HRD function as well as the overall business,” she said. “We are looking to increase awareness of our field as well as the positive impact we can have.  Even within our own membership, some may not be completely aware of the broad reach of our field.”
