Naval Leadership and Midway Tour

The Naval Leadership and Midway Tour will begin at the Manchester Grand Hyatt as we hear from retired naval leader Rear Admiral Leendert “Len” Hering, Sr., who served in the Navy for more than 32 years before retiring in 2009. Admiral Hering served in numerous leadership positions within the Navy, including as Commanding Officer of the USS Aries and the USS Doyle, as 1st Battalion Officer and Ethics Instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, Commanding Officer of Naval Base San Diego, and as a Flag Officer he served as Commander Navy Region Northwest, Commander Naval Surface Group Pacific Northwest, Commander Task Force 33, and Commander Navy Region Southwest. In recent years, Admiral Hering was instrumental in securing a number of highly visible legislative efforts from payday lending protections to education benefits for veterans and their families. He will be describing his career and leadership experiences in the Navy as well as his more recent efforts towards sustainability and education.

Following the talk and Q&A session, the group will proceed to the USS Midway Museum, located approximately 0.5 miles from the Manchester Hyatt. The Midway is America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century and is now open to the public. The museum has over 60 exhibits, including the crew’s sleeping quarters, the engine room, the post office, and primary flight control. More information about the Midway can be found at http://www.midway.org/. Admiral Hering will provide additional commentary on the ship, after which participants will be free to continue exploring the carrier on their own.

The Naval Leadership and Midway Tour will take place Wednesday, April 25 2-5 p.m. The cost is $40 and includes the talk with Admiral Hering, light beverages and snacks, and the tour of the USS Midway Museum (transportation is not included). There is a 20-person minimum for this tour.

Sustainability, Change, and Energy Innovation Tour

The Sustainability, Change, and Energy Innovation tour will be held at the San Diego Gas and Electric’s (SDG&E) newly constructed Energy Innovation Center (EIC). Built in 2010, the EIC is one of San Diego’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum buildings open to the public. The EIC focuses on the future of energy efficiency and green technology for Southern California. Attendees will be given a unique opportunity to learn how the EIC was designed as a LEED Platinum building during the sustainability tour. This tour will demonstrate how SDG&E mixed energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable materials to make the EIC an eco-friendly state-of-the-art facility.

After the sustainability tour, participants will hear from SDG&E representatives about the organization’s sustainability efforts. Next, attendees will hear from I-O psychologists at SDG&E whose roles within the organization involve preparing the utility workforce for new skills as technology changes jobs.

Finally, attendees will participate in the EIC’s Smart Home Experience, which includes visiting a model of an energy efficient home while learning some conservation tips for today and how technology and innovation will bring forth homes that monitor and manage our energy consumption in the future.

Additional information about the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center can be found here.
The Sustainability, Change, and Energy Innovation tour will take place Wednesday, April 25 from 1-4:30 p.m. The cost is $32 and includes transportation from the Manchester Grand Hyatt to the EIC, light beverages, and snacks, and the tours of the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center. There is a 20-person minimum for this tour.

Petco Park Tour

Just a half mile from the Manchester Grand Hyatt, Petco Park is a baseball stadium that serves as home to the San Diego Padres major league baseball team. Built in 2004, the stadium is one of the jewels of San Diego with its beautiful views and state-of-the-art design. One particularly unique aspect of the park is the Western Metal Supply building, a hundred-year old brick structure that had been scheduled for demolition to make way for Petco Park but instead was saved and incorporated into the design of the ballpark. Padres staff will take participants throughout all three levels of the stadium and the Western Metal Supply building, and will end with a visit to the playing field. After the behind-the-scenes look at the stadium, the group will gather to hear from and ask questions to Padres staff, who will cover a number of personnel-related issues related to the team and stadium.

The Petco Park Tour will take place Wednesday, April 25 10 a.m.-noon. The tour is $10, but please note that transportation and refreshments will not be included. There is a 40-person maximum for this tour.
