All Master Tutorial sessions offer 1.5 continuing education (CE) credits for psychology purposes per session attended. These sessions are designed to appeal to practitioners and academics at a post-graduate level. There is no additional cost to attend any Master Tutorial beyond the cost of basic conference registration. SIOP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SIOP maintains responsibility for these programs and their content.
Additionally, SIOP is an HR Certification Institute Approved Provider. Sessions 4, 29, and 272 are also available for PHR/SPHR/GPHR recertification credits.

Lori Brewer Collins brings a global focus to Cambria’s consulting and coaching practices. Her 20+ years of experience working in more than 20 countries on four continents has honed her awareness of the intricate dynamics and complexities of global organizational systems and cultures. Lori is an internationally recognized facilitator, executive coach, and conference presenter. Her background includes designing, delivering, and managing large-scale leadership development and culture change initiatives for multinational organizations. Lori’s strategic approach integrates the best of current research with practical, real-life application. She has served Fortune 100s, multinationals, government agencies, and private companies. Lori has also provided executive and team coaching to senior leaders in a variety of industries and companies including AXA, BP, FedEx, MasterCard, Microsoft, Nissan, Novo Nordisk, and Shell. In 1997, Lori founded Artemis Leadership Group, an international leadership and organizational development firm. During Lori’s time as manager for custom solutions at the Center for Creative Leadership — Europe, she was also a thought leader in its organizational leadership development practice. At Axialent Consulting, Lori served as senior principal and executive coach for customized culture change and leadership development initiatives. And at General Motors’ cutting-edge Saturn Corporation, she was team leader for leadership, corporate culture, and values. Lori holds an M.Ed. in human resource development from Vanderbilt University and a BA in business administration from Michigan State University. She is a certified executive coach through the Hudson Institute of Coaching and has served as adjunct faculty for Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management and Duke Corporate Education. Session 29 - Do-It-Yourself Cut Scores Using the General Eclectic Method

This session will familiarize the audience with the General Eclectic Method (GEM) of setting cut scores. The GEM is a flexible framework designed to optimize the standard setting process. Attendees will participate in activities to enhance their understanding of the process and extend what they learn beyond selection instruments.
- Design and implement an effective standard-setting process.
- Facilitate a standard-setting meeting.
- Apply standard-setting techniques to develop interpretable standards for business metrics such as survey responses and individual/organizational performance measures.
- Apply statistical information to assist subject matter experts (SMEs) in making cost/benefit decisions relating to cut scores.
- Formulate complex standard-setting decision requirements in a manner that facilitates decision-making and documentation.
Lorin M. Mueller, PhD, SPHR, is Managing Director of Assessment for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). His primary responsibility is overseeing a team of testing professionals to create and administer the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for licensing Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants. Dr. Mueller also serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County - Shady Grove Campus in the department of I-O psychology. He previously held the role of Principal Research Scientist at the American Institutes for Research. Dr. Mueller received his PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Houston.

This session examines humor in the workplace, including its theoretical bases, its consideration from the perspective of dependent, independent, and intervening variables, and describes avenues of research opportunities for I-O psychologists to pursue in understanding its manifestation. Examples will be used to animate the concepts being presented.
- Describe theoretical bases of humor
- Explain intervening variables that influence the nature and magnitude of the response to humor
- Explain how the workplace alters manifestations of humor and responses to it compared to humor in non-work settings
Dr. Paul M. Muchinsky served on the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Iowa State University from 1973-1993. In 1993 he was appointed the Joseph M. Bryan Distinguished Professor in the School of Business and Economics at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has authored over 100 journal articles over the course of his career, along with numerous chapters in edited books. His textbook, Psychology Applied to Work®, is now in its 10th edition. It is the leading book in the field. Dr. Muchinsky is a Fellow of SIOP and a Fellow of three other divisions of APA (the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Consulting, and Counseling). He was the recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Teaching Award from SIOP. He has authored the humor column in TIP for the past 30 years (with two interruptions in time): originally “The Department of Humor” and currently “The High Society.”
Session 109 - Building and Testing Temporal Theories in I-O Psychology

After reviewing differential and temporal approaches, participants learn how to avoid assumptions and notions hostile to temporal thinking, how to observe and quantify dynamic phenomena, and how to build temporal theories by using simple heuristics. Next, they learn making critical choices in designing studies that can test such theories.
- Distinguish temporal from differential approaches and describe the implications for research in I-O psychology
- Scrutinize assumptions, concepts and methods, and recognize the degree to which they are thwart or facilitate temporal research
- Explain principles of observing and quantifying temporal phenomena
- Apply heuristics in building temporal theories

Dr. Robert A. Roe is emeritus Professor of Organizational Theory and Organizational Behavior at Maastricht University (the Netherlands) and visiting professor at the University of Trento (Italy), The University of Valencia (Spain), the University of Leipzig (Germany), and the University of British Columbia (Canada). He has been Professor of Work & Organizational Psychology at the Dutch universities of Delft, Tilburg and Nijmegen, as well as director of the Work and Organization Research Center in Tilburg and the Netherlands Aeromedical Institute. He is currently President of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA), was founding president of the European Association of Work & Organizational Psychology (EAWOP), and played an active role in the European Network of Organizational and Work Psychologists (ENOP). Dr. Roe has written more than 400 scientific and professional publications, including several books. He has also served on the editorial boards of various scientific journals, currently including ‘Applied Psychology – An International Review’, the ‘Journal of Organizational Behavior’ (USA), and the ‘European Journal of W&O Psychology’ (Europe). He received his PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Amsterdam.
Session 272 - Take a Usability Journey: Focus on User-Centered Design

How well do you know your users? This interactive journey takes you through the software product lifecycle from a usability perspective. We'll provide practical advice for user-centered design and introduce methods for usability testing. Ensuring designs that are intuitive, yet psychometrically sound is often difficult.
- Describe ‘usability’ and why usability testing is important;
- Describe how to incorporate usability into each phase of the project lifecycle and identify potential pitfalls;
- Describe the components of a user persona and why it’s important to usability testing; and
- Describe the ‘think-aloud protocol’ as one method of usability testing.
Kim Karanovich is a Principal User Experience Designer within DDI’s software development organization (E-Systems), overseeing the user interface and user experience design for DDI’s software products. Kim has been working in UX and UI design for over 15 years, and has led design projects and design teams to create innovative user experiences that conform to industry standards, utilize latest technology, meet business and user requirements, and adhere to section 508 guidelines, while serving a global user base. She is an evangelist for user-centered design, ensuring that users and their tasks are highest priority by developing user personas and conducting rigorous rounds of usability testing. Kim and her team utilize a variety of design tools and techniques (including developing user personas, task flows, use cases, wireframes, clickable prototypes, information architectures, activity diagrams, mood boards, and design comps) when working with fast-paced Agile software development teams to effectively design web sites and rich internet applications. Kim’s extensive background in design and technical writing have helped shape DDI’s products and solutions, ensuring they are efficient, satisfying, and user-friendly. She has attended University of Pittsburgh and Bradford Business School.
Sheila M. Rioux is a manager at Development Dimensions International. She and her team play a key role in developing DDI’s formalized implementation and consultant education processes for new technologies and solutions. She is involved in developing and delivering the latest cutting-edge products and solutions that DDI has to offer. She has also partnered with DDI’s user experience designer to conduct usability testing on various interface designs during the product development lifecycle. Sheila has more than 15 years of experience in design, development, implementation, and evaluative research of assessment methodologies. She has managed large engagements with key clients involving the latest technology for recruitment, selection, and assessment solutions. Prior to her current role, Sheila was a member of DDI’s Center for Applied Behavioral Research where she conducted program evaluation and validation research with clients and identified human resource trends through large-scale benchmarking surveys. Sheila earned her Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida.
Tami Licht is the Director of Professional Services within DDI’s software development organization, overseeing functions that include technical support, technical project management and delivery activities. In Tami’s sixteen years with DDI, she has led and/or participated in every facet of technical product development. Recent strategic initiatives she’s led include the formation of a new Project Management Office (PMO) and the reorganization of the Professional Services Group, both aimed at streamlining technical product/solution development and liaising with internal and external customers. Tami has also accelerated the implementation of agile methodologies (SCRUM), replacing former waterfall methods. Current initiatives include broadening technical support coverage across the globe and establishing availability, stability and performance metrics for DDI’s talent platform. Tami’s background includes a B.S. in Computer Science with a Math minor, a M.S. in Information Systems, and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
