About the Organization

Founded in 1964, the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (the Consortium) is a non-profit educational association committed to the advancement of higher education in the region. The Consortium furnishes a platform for members to share resources and cooperate for the benefit of students, faculty, and community and provides leadership on matters related to higher education in local, state, and national governments. It is comprised of 13 universities and one college: American University, The Catholic University of America, Corcoran College of Art + Design, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Marymount University, National Defense University, National Intelligence University, Trinity Washington University, University of the District of Columbia, and University of Maryland.

About the Job

The Consortium is seeking a Vice President for Strategic Initiatives to be responsible for all Consortium efforts regarding collaborative academically- related programs, research initiatives, services, grants, and partnerships among or on behalf of member institutions.

Job Responsibilities



  • Direct the Consortium Research Fellows Program (CRFP) with Department of Defense research laboratories. Supervise all CRFP employees and staff affiliated with the CRFP, and supervise student recruitment. Serve as liaison with Department of Defense and its affiliated research laboratories. Serve as Principal Investigator on all CRFP research grants and contracts. Continually seek new sources of funding for the CRFP.
    1. Direct the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) Research Assistantship Program, including contract management, student recruitment and supervision. Serve as liaison to the USIP.
    2. Develop new contractual opportunities for Consortium students to obtain experience in a diversity of federal agencies and corporations to diversify disciplinary participation as well as revenue sources.
    3. Supervise cooperative projects with local organizations, such as the Economic Club and Cosmos Club programs.
    4. Convene the chief academic officers, chief research officers, academic deans, registrars, enrollment management directors, and financial aid directors from Consortium member institutions.
    5. Develop marketing strategies for the various cooperative strategies.
    6. Develop relevant databases related to cooperative programs for tracking and reporting.
    7. Coordinate collaborative Consortium responses to various RFI/RFP opportunities presented by the District or federal governments.
    8. Other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.


Job Requirements

Preferred Qualifications


  1. Terminal degree in social science or STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field.
  2. Academic rank of professor or equivalent position or credentials
  3. Extensive history of grant or contract funded research; experience collaborating with federal research laboratory preferred
  4. 10 years administrative experience with at least 5 years personnel supervision demonstrating effective management, oversight and leadership
  5. Strong interpersonal communication skills across a wide range of audiences
  6. Ability to travel occasionally for site visits and student/employee supervision
