About the Job

Role Purpose

  1. Provision of strategic talent support for selected functions: in conjunction with functional leaders and regional Talent Managers
  2. Support the development and implementation of the Talent Management strategy and what is called ‘the SABMiller Talent Management Way’ across selected functional areas of the organisation, globally.
  3. Ensure best practice advice, guidance and practice within the fields of succession / strategic workforce planning, talent identification, assessment, career development and engagement.

Functions Supported: Finance, Corporate Affairs, Legal, Global Business Services (TBC)

Organisational Context: 

This position reports directly to the Group Head of Talent Management who reports into the Group HR and Supply Chain Director. 

Outputs and accountabilities

 Functional Talent Strategy, Planning & Capability

  • In conjunction with the functional leadership teams, define and agree the talent strategy and priorities for selected functions, leveraging analytics to help ensure meaningful diagnosis of talent issues
  • Drive the development, implementation and monitoring of a 3-5 year Talent Plan to address strategic talent priorities for the function(s), addressing both ‘buy’ strategies and ‘build’ strategies (working in conjunction with Learning & Development colleagues).  Work with the L&D partner to ensure seamless integration with functional L&D plans, capability building and leadership development programmes
  • Work in collaboration with regional talent managers to ensure regional priorities and issues are understood and incorporated into functional talent planning, and with functional specialists to ensure alignment as appropriate (e.g. L&D, C&B, performance management etc)
  • Engage with functional leaders to provide specialist guidance and consultancy on broad talent needs & priorities within the function
  • Act as Custodian of the SABMiller Talent Management Way in the function(s) ensuring focus on implementing and anchoring the global standards
  • Identification of new and innovative approaches to ensuring talent management outcomes which meet the needs of a changing organisation. 

 Succession planning and talent analysis

  • Aggregate a functional view of succession gaps and with input from the talent management community (Regional Talent Managers and Group Head of Talent) define priorities for action
  • Facilitate functional talent review and succession planning processes for selected functions as part of the Global Talent Model for senior succession
  • Drive the use of metrics to extract key business insights which serve as an input into functional business planning.
  • This role will further support Group activities around the Global Talent Model and associated priorities

 Career Development

  • Provision of one-on-one pre-/post-transition support to global talent successors as relevant.  This may include facilitation of bespoke Facilitated Executive Individual Development Planning sessions for selected individuals.
  • Ensure the ongoing evolution of functional career frameworks, ensuring these tools are meaningful and fully leveraged


  • Support Group Assessment team members in conducting research related to the effectiveness of the assessment battery.  This may include partnering with the Assessment team and universities to conduct validation studies.
  • In conjunction with the Assessment team and / or broader talent management community, help develop new assessment approaches
  • Keep abreast of developments in the assessment literature.


Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Experience


  • BPS/HCPC registration as a chartered Psychologist (or equivalent).  Preferably Occupational, but may also come from a Clinical, Social or Research Psychology background.
  • Solid talent management experience gained in either a large blue chip / FTSE100 multi-national, or in a psychology consulting capacity
  • Well-developed group facilitation skills, coupled with understanding of instructional design and adult learning principles
  • Experience in the administration, interpretation and feedback of a range of psychometric assessment tools, including personality and cognitive tools (16PF, CPI and WAIS strongly advantageous)
  • Strong written English skills

 Preferred but not essential

  • Psychology research experience
  • Coaching qualification and/or experience in coaching senior leaders
  • Understanding of psychometric test construction
  • Proficiency with SPSS or other statistical software


  • Comfort in operating in a matrix environment – able to influence across boundaries, from a position of personal influence and persuasion
  • Commercial orientation – able to derive talent priorities from broader business objectives
  • Able to conceptualise future talent needs based on macro environmental data and internal talent data, and synthesise into a strategic talent plan.
  • Analytical mindset – able to extract insights from data
