Michael A. West

Michael West is dean at Aston Business School.  He graduated from the University of Wales in 1973 and received his PhD (The psychology of meditation) in 1977. He has authored, edited or co-edited seventeen books and more than 200 articles for scientific and practitioner publications, as well as chapters in scholarly books.  He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, APA, SIOP, the British Academy of Management, the Higher Education Academy, the International Association of Applied Psychologists and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He is a member of the Board of the European Foundation for Management Development.

His areas of research interest are team and organizational innovation and effectiveness, particularly in relation to the organization of health services. He lectures widely both nationally and internationally about the results of his research and his ideas for developing effective and innovative healthcare organizations.


Abstract

I-O Psychology in Health Care Services – the UK National Health Service

This presentation describes how staff management predicts patient mortality in hospitals. Data also reveal the costs of poor staff health and well being. Compelling data show how real as opposed to pseudo team working in health care organisations predicts a variety of staff and patient outcomes. The conclusion is that organizational culture and values are fundamental to the delivery of effective health care.
