Professional Practice Series Committee Report

August 26, 2009
To the Executive Committee,
There have been no substantive changes in the Committee's goals since the last report was submitted. They remain the goals of seeking a broader readership and reflecting an international perspective.
Good progress is being made in producing the books in the Series.
1.        Volumes Underway
A.    Under the current Editorial Board, three volumes are now being prepared:
·         “Going Global: Practical Applications and Recommendations for HR and OD Professionals in the Global Workplace,” by Editors Kyle Lundby and Jeffrey Jolton is scheduled to be submitted to Jossey-Bass in October 2009.
·         “Advancing Executive Coaching: Ingredients for Successful Leadership Coaching,” edited by Gina Hernez-Broome & Lisa A. Boyce, is scheduled to be submitted in February 2010. (This Volume came out of the 2008 Leading Edge Conference on a similar topic.)
·         And just last month, the contract was completed for a book on Technology Enhanced Assessment, to be edited by Nancy Tippins and Seymour Adler.
B.     Under the Prior Editorial Board:
·         “Performance Management: Putting Research into Action” edited by James Smither and Manny London has just come out.
·         “Strategy Driven Talent Management” edited by Rob Silzer and Ben E. Dowell will be out very soon.
2.      Possible discussion items
A.  A budget request has been submitted that would allow the Board to meet just before the SIOP Conference in Atlanta, to create a meaningful long term plan for the Professional Practice Series. This involves offering each Board member the reimbursement of one night’s hotel stay. We expect approval in September.
The Board now has 11 members. Three non-US based SIOP members were added in April to give more of a global viewpoint. These included Ashkanasy of Australia, Anderson of The Netherlands, and Hui of Hong Kong. The complete list of Board members, subject to dues payment, is now as follows

Adler, Seymour
Anderson, Neal R. (Netherlands) *
Ashkanasy, Neil M. (Australia )*
Fogli, Lawrence
Hui, Harry C. (Hong Kong)*
Kolmstetter, Elizabeth B.
Kraut, Allen I.
Lundby, Kyle
Lundquist, Kathleen Kappy
Macey, William H.
Saari, Lise M.

B.  Preliminary conversations with Eduardo Salas suggest the possibility of a coordinated pair of volumes, one from the Practice Series that would be linked to one in the Frontiers Series.  We are exploring the possibility of using the next Leading Edge Conference on Selection and Assessment as a possible basis for such a pair.  Note that the LEC has a Practice Chair as well as a Science Chair, and might be a good fit.
An Executive Board endorsement on this possibility might help it to move forward.
C. In addition, members of the EC are invited and encouraged to send me their ideas for new books, themes and topics in the Practice Series.
Respectfully Submitted,
Allen I. Kraut
Series Editor
