SIOP Annual Conference Nears
From Julie B. Olson-Buchanan
There are just a few more days until the 24th Annual SIOP Conference in New Orleans!
If you registered by February 15, 2009, your conference program has been mailed. SIOP's printing and mailing costs for the program are substantial, so be sure to bring your program with you to the conference. You can also use our online conference program to search for your favorite sessions or use our conference planner.
Our generous conference bag sponsors will provide bags for the first 3,200 people who come to the registration desk to pick up their name badges. Come to the registration desk early to be sure to get a bag!
The opening plenary session is set for 8 a.m. Thursday. Be sure not to miss this opening session, which includes the announcement of awards and new SIOP Fellows, and the presidential address by Gary Latham. The Closing Plenary, scheduled for 4:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, will include a special keynote address by noted author and business leader Steve Kerr.
As an extension of the Saturday Theme Track on Corporate Social Responsibility, SIOP members have two opportunities to give back to New Orleans at this year's conference. First, there are a few more available spots to be one of the SIOP volunteers to work at Langston Hughes Elementary Charter School (part of the New Orleans Recovery District). Volunteers will have the opportunity to make a functional, more appealing library for students who have been displaced by Katrina. Second, we will be collecting onsite cash donations to Make it Right Project in New Orleans to sponsor the construction of a house.
Taste of New Orleans & Bucktown All Stars
You won’t want to miss our closing reception Saturday, April 4, where you can taste New Orleans cuisine and listen/dance to NOLA's hottest band, the Bucktown Allstars!
I look forward to seeing you in New Orleans! Safe travels!

Going Green at the Conference
SIOP has utilized several eco-friendly options at this year's conference. These initiatives provide the same outstanding services to conference attendees with an added bonus of being green!
This year’s conference lanyards are made from eco-friendly 100% bamboo fiber. As the world’s fastest growing plant, bamboo is very sustainable and offers many other benefits such as the reduction of carbon dioxide gases, aiding in preventing rain runoff, and restoring degraded lands.
The hotel keycards are made from recycled PVC. This use gives a second life to PVC and is more environmentally friendly than printing on cards produced with corn, wood or plastic. There are no trees cut in the making of these keycards, no pesticides used, and the cards are more durable than paper.
Many of the signs at this year’s conference have been replaced with reusable signboards. These boards use less paper, are made from recycled materials, can be reused from year to year, and will also be used for the Leading Edge Consortium. SIOP is also using the hotel’s sign holders to reduce the amount of foam core and paper used at the conference.
The plastic name badge holders will be recycled after the conference as well. Look for boxes to drop yours into after the week's events so we can send them off to be recycled!

SIOP Hosts Russian Visitors
SIOP hosted two very special visitors March 11 and 12. Russian psychologists Sergey Alekseyevich Manichev and Natalia Olegovna Mastinen traveled from St. Petersburg to Bowling Green, Ohio, to tour the SIOP Administrative Office and meet with SIOP staff.
The psychologists traveled to the United States to learn about industrial-organizational psychology in preparation for developing a certification program for psychologists in Russia through the National Institute for Certification of Professional Psychologists (NICPP), the central body of the Psychologists Certification System in the country and the only organization that has the right to certify professional psychologists.
Mr. Sergey Alekseyevich Manichev is chair of the Department of Ergonomics and Engineering Psychology at the School of Psychology at St. Petersburg State University. Mrs. Natalia Olegovna Mastinen is chief manager at the NICPP, also in St. Petersburg.
