SIOP 24th Annual Conference

SIOP's 24th Annual Conference may be months away, but early registration is just around the corner. Registration for the conference, which will take place April 2-4, 2009 at the Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana, will begin in early January. SIOP Members will be notified when registration opens.

This year’s annual conference includes a Thursday Theme Track entitle “I-O Psychologists as Leading Edge in Evidence-Based Management,” a Saturday Theme Track entitled “Corporate Social Responsibility,” and workshops on April 1.

You can get more information about the annual conference on the conference page of the SIOP Web site, which contains links to registration information, the Sheraton Hotel, the 2009 SIOP Partner Program, and more. Be sure to check back in the coming weeks as more information is added.

Remember to Vote!

It’s time to decide who will be the newest leaders of SIOP. Voting is now open for the next SIOP executive board.
Voting members—Members, retired Members, Fellows and retired Fellows—should have recently received an e-mail detailing the voting process. Votes can be cast here. You will need your username and password to cast your vote. If you have forgotten your username and password, you have the option on the voting page to have them sent to you.

Voting ends January 31, 2009 at 12:00 midnight EST

Nominated offices are as follows:

  • President-Elect
  • Financial Officer/Secretary- 3-Year Term
  • Publications Officer- 3-Year Term (Professional Practice Series, Frontiers Series, the new journal, future book series or journals.
  • Communications Officer- 2-Year Term (Web site, TIP, newsletters, e-mail)
  • Membership Services Officer- 3-Year Term (Encouraging and monitoring applications to join SIOP, conducting member surveys, recognition and award programs (including Fellows), placement, includes institutional research.)

2008 SIOP Practitioner Needs Survey Released

The final report for the 2008 SIOP Practitioner Needs Survey has now been completed. The full report can be read here. The report includes very useful insights about the I-O profession, and the survey results are also reported in a series of articles published in the Practice Perspectives column of TIP. The SIOP Executive Committee is now reviewing the final survey report and is hopeful the results will have an impact on the future direction of SIOP.

SIOP Member Receives APA Award

Rob Ployhart, a SIOP member and associate professor of management in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, has been named the 2009 recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology.

The award is given every four years to an individual who has held a doctoral degree for or fewer nine years and is based upon the quality and quantity of work in applied psychology. Ployhart will receive the award, which includes a $1,000 prize, at the APA convention in August in Toronto, Ontario.

Ployhart's area of expertise is in human resources, with research focusing n how to improve the recruitment and selection of talented employees, and in so doing, benefit the firm’s performance. He has published more than 60 journal articles and chapters in professional publications and is the co-author of two books. He has given more than 100 presentations, held numerous workshops around the world, and served as a consultant for a number of corporations.
