Become a SIOP Conference Ambassador!

Are you a SIOP Student Affiliate who has attended two or more SIOP conferences?  If so, we need YOU! 

In an effort to welcome first-time attendees to the SIOP Annual Conference, we are looking for participants in the new Conference Ambassador program.  This pilot program will informally match new SIOP conference attendees (“Newcomers”) with seasoned SIOP conference attendees (“Ambassadors”) to help connect the newcomer and provide a better conference experience for all.  As most of the individuals that have signed up as Newcomers thus far are students, we are looking for students who are not new to the SIOP conference scene to become Ambassadors.

Participation as an Ambassador involves only minimal effort, including the following:

1. Connect with the Newcomer at least once via email or phone in the weeks leading up to the Annual Conference.
2. Meet with the Newcomer at least once on-site at the conference (coffee, a drink, whatever you prefer).
3. Help the Newcomer network at the conference by introducing him or her to some of your colleagues.

It’s as simple as that! You can sign up to be an Ambassador through your initial conference registration process or by returning to your completed registration via the Attendee Service Center.  If you are interested, please sign up ASAP so that we can match you up with one of the eagerly-waiting Newcomers who needs an Ambassador!

 SIOP Earns HR Certification Institute Status

As we continue identifying and meeting the needs of our growing membership, SIOP is proud to announce that we are now an HR Certification Institute Approved Provider. 

For our members with PHR, SPHR or GPHR certifications, this means that your attendance at SIOP events, including the upcoming SIOP Annual Conference, can help you earn recertification credit hours! 

We will be updating the Continuing Education page regarding approved programs at the conference, and in the coming months, more information will be shared with you regarding how serving in a SIOP leadership role or just being a SIOP member can help you earn more of those much-needed recertification credit hours.  For more information about PHR, SPHR or GPHR certification or recertification, please visit the HR Certification Institute online at

 “Performance Management” Wins AHRD Book Award

One of the newest additions to SIOP’s Professional Practice series, “Performance Management: Putting Research into Action,” was recently selected to receive the Academy of Human Resource Development’s R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of the Year Award.

The award will be presented at the 2010 AHRD International Research Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, during the conference awards presentation February 26.

“Performance Management” (2009), edited by SIOP Fellows James W. Smither and Manuel London, discusses the shift in HR from performance appraisal to performance management. This volume of the Professional Practice Series can be purchased now at the SIOP Store!

 APA Meritorious Research Service Call for Nominations

The APA Board of Scientific Affairs (BSA) is soliciting nominations for the Meritorious Research Service Commendation. This commendation recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to psychological science through their service as employees of the federal government, private foundations, and professional societies.
Contributions are defined according to service to the field that directly or indirectly advances opportunities and resources for psychological science.  This may include staff at federal, regulatory, or nonprofit agencies. BSA will consider a broad range of employers/organizations, and the board will consider nominees from the nonprofit sector.

Nominees may be active or retired but ordinarily will have a minimum of 10 years of such service. The individual’s personal scholarly achievements (i.e., research, teaching, and writing) are not considered in the selection process independent of their service contributions.
When submitting a nomination please provide the following:

• A letter of nomination that describes and supports the individual’s contributions (e.g., nature of the individual’s service to psychological science, positions held, program development activities).  The nomination letter should be no more than two pages long.
• A curriculum vita
• Three letters of support from scientists, at least two from outside the nominee’s organization

 APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology

The American Psychological Association Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) announces its third annual Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology to be held August 10, 2010, in San Diego, California. Applications and supporting materials are due by 5:00 pm eastern time March 1, 2010.

This one-day Institute will target approximately 30 mid-career women psychologists who are APA members and who work full time in academic or academic medicine settings.
