Annual Conference A Success!

SIOP members turned out by the thousands April 8-10 to attend SIOP’s 25th annual conference in Atlanta.

The anniversary conference had the third highest attendance in SIOP conference history with a total of 3,938 people registered for this year’s conference. Attendees chose from more than 300 presentations to attend.

SIOP Welcomes 13 New Fellows

At this year’s annual conference, SIOP welcomed 13 of its members as Fellows, the Society’s highest honor. Announcement of the awards was made April 8 during the opening plenary in Atlanta.

SIOP Fellows have distinguished themselves by their outstanding contributions to the field, and an invitation to become a SIOP Fellow is a significant honor granted to only a small percentage of industrial-organizational psychologists.

Leading Edge Consortium Registration Open

Registration is open for the 6th Annual Leading Edge Consortium (LEC), "Developing and Enhancing High-Performance Teams." This year’s LEC will take place October 22-23 at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, in Tampa, Florida. SIOP past president Gary Latham will chair the event, with co-chairs Deb Cohen and Scott Tannenbaum.

The LEC will bring together thought leaders from academia and practice to focus on the robust topic of teams and team leadership. We will hear from speakers covering a wide range of issues such as team structure, team effectiveness, team leadership, virtual teams, and team engagement. We will engage the speakers and the participants alike in discussions about the practice and science of teams and will apply the discussion to public, private, and military settings. There will be numerous take-aways from the conference and the day and a half event promises to be exciting!

The consortium registration includes lunch on Friday and Saturday, breaks, and receptions on Thursday and Friday evening. Registration is $425 on or before August 28, 2010 and $495 thereafter.

IOP Journal Commentaries Due May 28

Two focal articles have recently been accepted for Volume 3, Issue 4 of SIOP’s journal, Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice. They are now available for comment on the journal page of the SIOP Web site. 

The deadline for commentary submissions is May 28, 2010.

The first focal article for this issue is by Reeshad S. Dalal, Silvia Bonaccio, Scott Highhouse, Daniel R. Ilgen, Susan Mohammed, and Jerel E. Slaughter and is titled “What if Industrial-Organizational Psychology Decided to Take Workplace Decisions Seriously?” The second focal article is by Fritz Drasgow, Oleksandr Chernyshenko, and Stephen Stark and is titled “75 Years After Likert: Thurstone Was Right!”

The focal articles can be downloaded by clicking on the Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice link in the publications dropdown menu.  The journal page also contains details on the process of preparing and submitting a commentary. Recordings are now available for the SIOP Visibility Committee's recent free Webinar, “So You Want to be an I-O Psychologist?”

The webinar introduces the field of industrial-organizational psychology and different career paths within the field, and is geared toward students or those interested in changing careers. For professors, this webinar as well as the last webinar, "Graduate School and Careers in I-O Psychology,” are useful resources for psychology students.
