SECRETARY OF LABOR
WASHINGTON

Feb. 3, 1998

Dear Members of the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology:

Congratulations to the Society as it celebrates its 50th year.

My vision for the future of the American workplace and the mission of the U.S. Department of Labor, as we enter a new century and an increasingly global economy, is to keep our workers the most competitive and productive in the world.  To do that, we must:

  • equip workers with the skills to find, hold and keep good jobs, with rising incomes throughout their working lives;
  • help move people from welfare rolls to payrolls;
  • assure that all working Americans are financially secure when they retire;
  • guarantee every worker a safe, healthful and fair workplace, free of discrimination; and
  • help working men and women balance the competing demands of family and job.

Together, in our varied professional disciplines, we can and will contribute to a well-trained and better-compensated American workforce in the new century.

My best wishes to all your members for another 50 years of progress.

Sincerely,

Alexis M. Herman
