Call for Program Proposals:
2002 APA Convention in Chicago

Rosemary Hays-Thomas
The University of West Florida

Submission Deadline: December 3, 2001.

Will you have interesting research to share with psychology colleagues in August 2002? Do you want to inform an audience beyond the membership of SIOP? Is Chicago a place where you could host a panelperhaps of nonpsychologiststo say something valuable to members of SIOP and others who will attend the APA convention? Could you offer a workshop or tutorial to provide CE credits for your licensed colleagues? Can you recommend invited speakers on technology and work behavior, conceptions of fairness, or other I-O topics? If so, consider submitting your ideas for the 2002 SIOP program at APA, to be held Thursday, August 22Sunday, August 25, 2002 at McCormick Place, Chicago.

APAs Board of Convention Affairs (BCA), under the leadership of Bill Howell, has developed a new format for the 2002 meeting in an attempt to make the convention more attractive to members and to be responsive to complaints about too much overlapping programming. Divisions have been organized into clusters, and one-third of the convention program (10 hours) will be built around consolidated track programs developed by each of the clusters. There will be convention-wide plenary sessions sponsored by APA when no competing sessions will be held. And there will be the regular programming sponsored by all the Divisions. Each divisions program hours are determined by BCA using a formula based on the number of members from various divisions who attend the convention. Division 14s cluster also includes Divisions 5 (Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics), 13 (Consulting), 19 (Military), 21 (Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology), and 23 (Consumer Psychology).

Cluster Themes

We have chosen two track themes for our cluster which are quite relevant to the work and interests of SIOP members: Psycho-technology: Implications of Technology for Psychology and Playing Fair: Juggling Multiple Views of Justice. Five consecutive hours of programming in varying formats will be scheduled for each track. Douglas Griffith of Division 21 will solicit contributions for the technology topic, and I will be organizing the mini-program on fairness. We are soliciting suggestions for keynote speakers, panelists, CE workshop/tutorial presenters, debates, and other formats. Posters on these topics submitted through the regular review process may also be scheduled as part of this track programming. Please contact me at rlowe@uwf.edu if you are interested in participating or if you can suggest an outstanding participant or presenter who can contribute to this programming. For suggestions or questions about the technology topic, please contact Douglas Griffith, dougg@erim-int.com, 4001 N. Ninth Street, Arlington, VA 22203-1959; (703) 803-0100, ext. 4120.

SIOP Programming

The rest of the regular SIOP program at APA will be built from submissions for topical symposia, conversation hours, panels, posters/papers, and whatever other effective formats you propose. Submissions will be accepted from APA and/or SIOP members, or from persons sponsored by an APA or SIOP member. All submissions must be double-spaced, with one-inch margins in Times New Roman 12-pt font. Two stamped, self-addressed envelopes must be included.

Individual presentations (predominantly posters) require five copies of a 500- to 1000-word summary and five copies of a 100-word abstract. Because these are blind-reviewed, please include identifying information (name, affiliation, SIOP/APA member status or sponsorship, address, phone, e-mail, and fax) on a separate sheet ONLY. Please DO NOT include identifying information on the summary or abstract.

Programs with multiple presenters (e.g., panels, symposia) are NOT blind reviewed because the evaluation of the proposal rests partly on the identities and contributions of the participants. Please submit five copies of the proposal, including a 300-word summary of the overall topic and format, and 300-word summaries of the role and contribution of each participant. Identifying information for the submitter and all participants should be provided with the overall summary.

Criteria for evaluating submissions will be

  • Appropriateness of the topic for SIOP
  • Technical adequacy and scholarly quality
  • Contribution to knowledge on the topic
  • Interest value, coherence, and innovation in substance and format

Deadline for receipt of submissions is December 3, 2002. Submissions will NOT be accepted by fax. For specific details about program submissions, see the September issue of the APA Monitor, APAs Web site at www.apa.org, and the SIOP Web site. The call is also available from the APA Convention Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242.

Submissions should be mailed to Rosemary Hays-Thomas, SIOP/APA Program Chair, Department of Psychology, The University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL 32514-5751.

Spread the word about SIOP, who we are and what we do, by submitting your ideas to the 2002 SIOP/APA Program in Chicago!
