I-O Related Groups

The following list of groups is provided as a service to SIOP members who may be interested in finding local or interest area I-O groups.1 There is no direct affiliation between SIOP and any of these groups. I have tried to find a Web site for each group, but if one is not available then a current contact is provided. Also, several groups formerly listed in Toms article are defunct now, so are not listed here. This list is also available on the SIOP Web site: www.siop.org, with links directly to the groups Web sites. ASAP (Atlanta Society of Applied Psychology). Bimonthly meetings, periodic workshops, newsletter, and an e-mail listserv. CE credits available. Job/resume postings. About 80 members. www.asapwebsite.homestead.com.

ASTD (American Society of Training and Development). The major, national training association. Many local chapters. Info-line. Publishes books, journal, and software. www.astd.org.

BAAP (Bay Area Applied Psychologists). Founded in 1996, this group meets on a quarterly basis to discuss a broad range of I-O topics. Meets in the San Francisco/Bay Area. About 50 members and is considering a newsletter. www.BAAPonline.org.

Brunswik Society. Informal association of researchers who are interested in understanding and improving human judgment and decision making. Members of the Society share an appreciation of the work of the psychologist Egon Brunswik. The Society has no dues. Its primary activities have been an annual meeting held every year since 1985, a yearly newsletter (since 1986), and an Internet discussion list (since 1993). www.brunswik.org/.

Central Florida I-O Interest Group. An informal IO interest group with infrequent dinner meetings rotating between Tampa Bay and Orlando. About 75 members. Contact Paul Spector at 813-9740357. E-mail spector@chuma.cas.usf.edu.

CIOP (Chicago I-O Psychologists, formerly GCAIOP). 4 to 6 half-day seminars/workshops each year and an annual dinner meeting. Newsletter. Job postings. www.iit.edu/~ciop/.

CODESP (Cooperative Organization for the Development of Employee Selection Procedures). A consortium of classified personnel departments in Nevada and California public school districts. Several general membership and training meetings each year. Newsletter. Share test-item data bank. Over 100 members. www.codesp.com.

COP (College of Organizational Psychologists, Australia). Branches in North South Wales and Victoria and is affiliated with the Australian Psychological Society. www.psychsociety.com.au/units/fr_aps_units.htm; click on Colleges.

CO-WYO I-O (Colorado-Wyoming Association of I-O Psychologists). Meetings 3 to 4 times a year to discuss a wide range of IO topics. Nearly 125 members. Competency Consortium. Consortium providing a forum for organizations to share competency models, applications, lessons learned and benchmark best practices. Companies must qualify to become members. Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations. Founded 1996 to aid advancement of research and practice related to emotional intelligence in organizations. Currently made up of 8 founding members and 15 additional members who are individuals with a strong record of accomplishment as applied researchers in the field. CSIOP (I-O Division of the Canadian Psychology Association). Quarterly newsletter. Hosts workshops at CPA annual conference. Job and internship postings. www.ssc.uwo.ca/psychology/csiop/.

EAWOP (European Association of Work and Organizational Psychologists). A network of networks liking together I-O groups from several European nations. Newsletter and regular conference. www.eawop.org.

GIOP (Gateway I-O Psychologists). Bimonthly meetings in the St. Louis area. Newsletter. Members-only discussion list at www.egroups.com/list/gioptalk/. GIOP electronic mailing service http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gioptalk.

HAIOP (Houston Association of I-O Psychologists). Monthly meetings during the academic year. CE I-O credits available. Newsletter. About 80 members. Contact Eric Brown at (713) 729-7704, fax (713) 729-4019, e-mail erbst@aol.com.

HFES (Human Factors and Ergonomics Society). 5,000 members strong, and in existence since 1957! About 60 local chapters and 20 technical groups internationally. Annual meeting usually in October. Monthly newsletter and 2 periodicals. www.hfes.org

HODN (Heartland Organization Development Network, Kansas City area). An association of Midwest OD practitioners representing professional roles in private industry, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and consultants who engage in private practice and/or teach. Heartland OD is a values-based professional community, which supports its members in their work in human organization and systems development, and offers leadership and scholarship to the profession. HRPS (Human Resource Planning Society). National group for senior HR consultants, academics and Fortune 500 practitioners. 3,000 members. Focus is on applying strategic HR management practices to organizations. Sponsors research. Over a dozen seminars/workshops each year and an annual conference. Quarterly journal and newsletter. 11 affiliate chapters in US. Affiliated with European HR Forum (EHRF) and Australian HR Institute (AHRI). CEUs offered for workshops. www.hrps.org/html/index.html.

IPMA (International Personnel Management Association). The SHRM for public sector HR generalists. 50 local chapters. Offers online ordering of test materials. www.ipma-hr.org/.

IPMA-Assessment Council. A subset of IPMA. Focuses on recruitment, selection and assessment issues primarily in the public sector. 600 members. No local chapters. Bimonthly newsletter. Other publications. Online bulletin board. Annual conference. Periodic training workshops. www.ipmaac.org/.

ISPI (International Society for Performance Improvement). A 39-year-old group of performance technology folks. 10,000 members. Many local chapters in US and abroad. Conferences, workshops, journal. MAIOP (Michigan Association of I-O Psychologists). Four meetings a year in the Detroit area. About 150 members from SE Michigan, northern Ohio, and southern Ontario. www.maiop.org.

MAPAC (Mid-Atlantic Personnel Assessment Consortium, Inc.). An association of mid-Atlantic public sector agencies interested in assessment. 3 conferences a year and a newsletter. Around 23 member agencies. www.ipmaac.org/mapac/.

Mayflower Group. Founded in 1971, consortium of blue-chip companies employing at least 10,000 U.S.-based employees. Dedicated to employee opinion surveys. Limited membership with a tough qualification process. 2 meetings per year. www.mayflowergroup.org.

METRO (Metropolitan New York Association for Applied Psychology). Grandma of all I-O groups, founded in 1939. Monthly meetings, newsletter, job listings. 500600 members. www.MetroAppPsych.com/

MPPAW (Minnesota Professionals for Psychology Applied to Work). Energetic new group started in 1998. Well organized. Seven monthly meetings during the academic year in the Twin Cities area. About 200 members. Newsletter. CEUs offered. www.mppaw.org.

NCIOP (North Carolina Industrial and Organizational Psychologists). Professional network of, at present, some 100 I-O professionals from universities, corporations, and private practices. Meets twice a year for a one-day program, and publishes two digital newsletters each year. www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cep/2/NCIO/FIRST.html.

NESAP (New England Society for Applied Psychologists). Informal group of senior psychologists open to new blood. About two dozen members. Two meetings per year in the Newton/Boston area. Twice-yearly newsletter. www.NESAP.org

Northwest Conversations. An informal association of assessment professionals in the Pacific Northwest. Annual 2day conference in Seattle. 80100 members. Contact is Leta Danielson. E-mail letad@dop.wa.gov.

ODI (Organization Development Institute). Newsletter, journal, job placement, assistance in starting a local OD network. www.members.aol.com/odinst/membinfo.htm.

OH-IO (Ohio I-O Psychologists). A newer group struggling to come alive in central Ohio. Three to four evening meetings planned per year. Want to qualify to grant CE credit. ODN (Organization Development Network). 3,200 members. Works closely with 36 regional ODN groups. Yearly fall national conference, special interest conference each spring. Excellent job line. Quarterly journal. Listserv. www.ODNetwork.org/.

PAI (Psychological Assessment Initiative, South Africa). Focuses on marketing and educating people about psychological assessment, validation studies, and ethics of use. 16 individual and 22 organizational/corporate members. www.pai.org.za.

Performance America Learning. A network devoted to assessing and improving government performance through organizational assessment and development. Similar to Mayflower Group in goals and objectives. Current members include federal, state, and local government agencies. Quarterly meetings. www.opm.gov/employ/html/perf_am.htm.

PTC/A (Personnel Testing Council of Arizona). Quarterly workshops in the Phoenix area and a newsletter. www.ipmaac.org/ptca/index.html.

PTC/MW (Personnel Testing Council of Metropolitan Washington, DC). About 300 members. Monthly meetings, periodic workshops, and an excellent newsletter. Job listings. www.ptcmw.org.

PTC/NC (Personnel Testing Council of Northern California). Monthly meetings rotating between the Bay area and Sacramento, spring conference and a quarterly newsletter. Periodic training workshops. www.ipmaac.org/ptcnc/.

PTC/SC (Personnel Testing Council of Southern California). Monthly meetings, spring conference, and a newsletter. Periodic research meetings and workshops. Between 200300 members. www.ipmaac.org/ptcsc/index.html.

PSAIOP (Puget Sound Association of I-O Psychologists). Newer group with over 50 members in the Seattle area. Quarterly luncheon meetings and periodic continuing education. Contact Peter Scontrino at (425) 392-5694, e-mail mpscontrino@aol.com.

SCIP (Society for Computers in Psychology). Formed in 1971. Annual conference, journal, and journal discounts for members. ww2.lafayette.edu/~allanr/scip.html      

SCPMA (Southern California Personnel Management Association). Monthly meetings in LA or Orange County area. Spring conference. Training sessions throughout the year. About 400 members. Contact Bill Osness at (714) 536-5586, fax (714) 374-1571.

SIOP (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology). SIOP is a division within APA and an organizational affiliate of APS. Spring Conference with CE credits for workshops, quarterly newsletter (TIP), discounted publications for members (6,000+), job and consultant locator services. SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). National group focusing on the needs of HR generalists. Your VP of HR belongs to this group. Scads and scads of local chapters. Journals, job listings, annual conference, CEUs for workshops. www.shrm.org   

SJDM (Society for Judgment & Decision Making). Annual meeting. Newsletter, journal discounts for members, and eligibility for discounted membership dues in APS. www.sjdm.org   

SPIM (Society of Psychologists in Management). National group whose focus is on the application of psychology to management. Annual conference. Newsletter and journal. About 250 members. www.spim.org   

TIOP (Texas I-O Psychologists). An organization serving the needs of I-O psychologists across the state of Texas. About 65 members. WRIB (Western Regional Item Bank). Cooperative personnel testing resource utilizing a test-item database. Periodic training sessions. 175 members from public agencies nationwide. www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/hr/wrib   

WRIPAC (Western Regional Intergovernmental Personnel Assessment Council). A consortium of public sector agencies in California, Nevada and Arizona with an interest in assessment. Three meetings a year. Job analysis tool, video training tapes and monograph series, and newsletter. www.wripac.com/
