SIOP Foundation Report:
Scholarship Drive Launched
Paul W. Thayer
North Carolina State University
You all remember your grad student days. Very few of us
lived high on the hog. Most of us had frequent financial problems. Wouldnt
$2,000 have been most welcome to help with books, thesis or dissertation
research, or just eating?
Remembering how tough times can be for students, the Foundation is launching
a major drive for scholarships. It is our hope to raise $190,000 to add to the
$10,000 already raised for the endowed Scholarship Fund. Earnings from the total
of $200,000 would provide for 5 scholarships of $2,000 per year.
Now that you have a job, we hope you will join us in contributing to the
Scholarship Fund. We need at least $100 from each of you and hope many of you
will see your way clear to giving $500. (And if any of you graduate students are
well off, we would welcome a contribution from you, too.)
You will be receiving a formal request soon, if you havent already. You
dont need to wait for that, however. Just send a check to the SIOP
Foundation, PO Box 1205, Bowling Green, OH, 43402. Make it to The Dayton
Foundation, noting that it is for the SIOP Foundation Scholarship Fund. Please
respond with a generous check. We need to support those who will follow us in
our field. Many thanks.
In other news, the SIOP Foundation has published its second Annual Report.
You should receive it shortly after Thanksgiving. In it you will see that over
$500,000 has been raised and that several grants have already been made to SIOP.
In all, the Foundation returned $13,000 to the Society: $3,000 for the Owens,
Myers, and Flanagan awards, and two awards from the Advancement Fund, $7,500 for
small grants to researchers, and $2,500 for educating the public about I-O
psychology.
Of special interest is the $50,000 donation by Sidney Fine to stimulate
research and practice on job analysis and related issues. (More detail on this
award will be forthcoming.)
The Foundation is off to a good start. Please add to the momentum with a
generous gift to the SIOP Foundation Scholarship Fund.
