& the Scientific Affairs Committee

The SIOP Scientific Affairs Committee is excited to report that the 3rd annual Science Funding Speed Mentoring event held on Friday, April 15 at SIOP 2016 in Anaheim, CA was quite a success! With the generous help of eight generous and wonderful mentors (another huge thanks to Drs. Lillian Eby, Shawn Burke, Stephen Stark, Paul Hanges, Daisy Chang, Paul Bliese, Howard Weiss, and Tammy Allen) we were able to improve the science funding knowledge and interests of 32 motivated and enthusiastic SIOP members! Program evaluation results revealed that participants’ comfort, knowledge, and familiarity of practices related to securing scientific funding all benefited after attending the mentoring event. As in previous years, the event was rated as “good” or “very good” by every attendee, and attendees expressed interest in participating again in the future and recommending the event to others. Some of the remarks made by our protégés:

  • Thank you! This was a fantastic opportunity for I-Os in all career stages.
  • I liked this event; we can ask questions directly in front of [mentors] who have a lot of grant experience.
  • Great information! The “behind the scenes” nature of the information provided from experienced grant writers and researchers [was very helpful].

We also received many great suggestions for how to improve the session in the future, and look forward to providing this service for our membership again in 2017!
