The SIOP Professional Practice Book Series can help solve today’s most pressing talent management issues in organizations using evidence-based practice from the field of industrial and organizational psychology.

Working with Oxford University Press, the Professional Practice Series Editorial Board is committed to bringing a new generation of practice-oriented books to industrial–organizational (I-O) psychologists, human resource practitioners, and policymakers.

Relaunched in 2019 after a brief publishing hiatus, the series will incorporate new volumes on the “basics” of HR management and develop volumes focused on “core” I-O psychology topics that include the latest research and best practices.

Series Editor

Doug Reynolds headshotDoug Reynolds, Ph.D. is Executive Vice President at Development Dimensions International (DDI), where his team develops and implements software-based assessment and learning products in Fortune 500 companies.  In this role, Doug is an advisor, author, coach, and specialist in the use of people data to enhance leadership performance and reduce corporate risk.  His consulting work focuses on the deployment of technology–based behavioral simulations used for executive and leadership evaluation. Doug has published and presented frequently on topics related to the intersection of organizational psychology and technology.  He co-edited Talent Assessment: Embracing Innovation and Mitigating Risk in the Digital Age (2023), Next Generation Technology-Enhanced Assessment (2018), and the Handbook of Workplace Assessment (2010), and coauthored Online Recruiting and Selection (2009).  He is a Past President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (2012-2013) and recipient of SIOP’s Distinguished Professional Contributions Award.

Gerald Jay Goodwin headshotGerald (Jay) Goodwin, Ph.D. is the Chief Scientist at the US Army Research Institute where he guides and mentors the basic and applied research programs in personnel testing, leader development, team effectiveness, and people analytics.  Jay also serves as a scientific advisor to Army senior leaders and executives for personnel selection, recruiting, training and development, leadership, and teamwork. Jay has more than 20 years of experience leading projects in areas including team and organizational effectiveness, leadership, and cultural factors in complex organizations. His published research is primarily focused on team effectiveness topics, including co-editing Team Effectiveness in Complex Organizations (2008). He has also guided the creation and publication of the edited volumes on multiteam systems, computational psychometrics, and organizational culture.  Jay is a SIOP and APA Fellow, and previously chaired SIOP’s scientific affairs committee.

 

 

Board Members

Dr. Robert Calderón headshotDr. Robert Calderón is the Senior Director of Organizational Research and Consulting at Fors Marsh. He has over 25 years of experience working on and leading applied personnel research projects in both the private and public sectors. Dr. Calderón has completed research and consulting projects for a broad range of federal clients, including the Department of Defense, Department of State, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Department of Education. He has extensive experience in the development and validation of assessments, workforce analysis and planning, career pathing and modeling, and training needs analysis. Dr. Calderón is active in publishing and presenting at conferences and promoting thought leadership at national conferences. He has also taught graduate-level courses in research methods, statistics, and performance management as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University and George Mason University.
 

Gena Cox headshotGena Cox, Ph.D., is the CEO of Feels Human, LLC. She advises and coaches leaders on leadership impact, employee engagement, career optimization, and workplace inclusion.

Previously, Gena held various leadership roles, including Executive Consulting Leader (IBM), Dir. of Organizational Consulting (HSNi) HSNi, and VP of Selection and Assessment (Raymond James Financial). She has also held adjunct teaching roles in I/O psychology and strategic human resources management.

Dr. Cox is the author of Leading Inclusion, an award-winning guidebook book for corporate leaders, and co-authored the Harvard Business Review article “5 Strategies to Infuse D&I into Your Organization.” Gena is a frequent media contributor.

Dr. Cox is a member of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Committee for the Advancement of General Applied Psychology (CAGAP), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Professional Practice Series Editorial Board and has served in leadership roles on SIOP’s Awards and Leading Edge Consortium committees.

Gena earned a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida.

 

Tracy Kantrowitz headshotTracy Kantrowitz Ph.D. is Chief Product Officer at Personnel Decisions Research Institute (PDRI) where she leads assessment product development and implementation programs. She has published in leading journals on assessment science and has led large-scale assessment programs for U.S Office of Personnel Management, Air Force, Army, NASA, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, members of the intelligence community, and Google. A SIOP Fellow, she recently served as its Professional Practice Officer. She has been awarded the Distinguished Early Career Contributions – Practice and M. Scott Myers Award for applied research in the workplace, and serves on the editorial board of Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice.

 

 

Kate LaPort headshotKate LaPort, Ph.D. is a Principal Research Scientist on Amazon’s Global Hiring Science (GHS) team. Since joining Amazon in 2017, Kate developed and executed a strategic global interview research program, built GHS’ DEI research strategy, and oversees the team’s Rapid Insights research program which delivers data-driven, actionable insights to Recruiting leadership. Prior to Amazon, she worked as a Client Care Consultant within Aon’s Assessment Solutions team. Kate began her practitioner career a Personnel Psychologist with the U.S. Army Research Institute. Kate holds a doctoral degree in I/O Psychology from George Mason University. She has extensive experience teaching research methods, statistics, and core I/O psychology content at both the undergraduate and graduate level at George Mason University and Catholic University. Kate has co-authored research in Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Intelligence, Military Psychology, several book chapters, and is a regular contributor to the SIOP conference program.

 

Kara Orvis headshotDr. Kara L. Orvis, Ph.D. is the Executive Vice President of the Science & Technology at Aptima, Inc. She is also a principal scientist with 25 years of experience in government research and development across the military services. Her expertise is in the areas of training, leadership, teams, culture, distributed work, and unobtrusive measurement for which she has more than 80 publications/ presentations, including one edited book. Dr. Orvis has been awarded two patents related to using text-based data to assess teamwork skills and to match teams to job descriptions. She served as the Chair for the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Human Systems Division (2020-2023) and has served in several leadership positions in support of the Interservice/Industry Training Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), including Special Events Deputy Chair and Chair (2015-2019) and Training Subcommittee Deputy Chair and Chair (2019-2021). She has also taught undergraduate courses at George Mason University for both the Psychology Department and School of Management. Dr. Orvis holds an MA and a PhD in industrial-organizational psychology from George Mason University and a BA in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

 

Evan Sinar headshotEvan Sinar, Ph.D.  is Senior Research Scientist for Candidate Intelligence at Amazon, where he conducts global, mixed-methods (qualitative + quantitative) research on hourly candidate experience, employee value proposition, and employment branding. His team implements globally-consistent candidate sensing mechanisms spanning initial application to day 1 start. He uses AI/ML and NLP techniques to integrate and analyze candidate and new hire feedback resulting in identification and resolution of application process challenges impeding efficient, well-informed, and delightful experiences in joining Amazon. He partners across the business to design and implement program and process changes to optimize candidate satisfaction and minimize early attrition. Evan is a frequent author on topics such as AI, future of work, HR analytics, digital coaching, candidate reactions, and technology-enabled assessment. He is a fellow of SIOP and has served terms on the SIOP Executive Board as Financial Officer and Conferences & Programs Officer.
