Members Approve Dues Restructuring
SIOP members have approved a vote that increases dues to $100 for professional members (Fellows, Members, Associates, and International Affiliates) and $50 for Student Affiliates and retired statuses. The vote, which concluded April 26, followed a 60-day comment period by membership. The measure, which required majority approval, received 64.9% of the vote with 451 votes being cast in favor and 244 being cast against. The new dues rates are effective immediately.
The board recommended the dues restructuring in order to provide additional financial resources to support our growing profession. In their estimation, the former dues level did not provide enough resources to fund many of the important projects desired by membership.
The Executive Board receives many requests for projects each year, and it’s not uncommon for those requests, regardless of the benefits that they might offer to members, to be turned down, cut back, or delayed because there is no flexibility to pay for them.
There are several important projects under development to enhance member services and better serve the profession, such as supporting increased visibility efforts via branding, increased advocacy, and SIOP's continued effort to monitor and influence licensing legislation.
The desire for SIOP to do more was echoed in membership survey results. In the 2011 SIOP Member Survey, 85% of the 1,627 respondents stated they were satisfied with SIOP as a professional organization, and 65% of respondents said they would be willing to pay higher dues for SIOP to provide additional services.
SIOP membership is increasingly seeking more and better services that require greater funding. Several member services have been added recently, including subscriptions to Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice (IOP), Newsbriefs, and an affordable subscription rate for the member-only SIOP Research Access service. Enhancements to professional networking and visibility opportunities, such as our conferences, have recently been added and the online member community my.SIOP was launched.
