Apply When You Submit Your Conference Proposals for SIOP 2014
Every year, the SIOP Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Ad-Hoc Committee recognizes one study at the annual SIOP conference with the Best LGBT Research Award. If you are submitting an LGBT-related study to the 2014 SIOP Annual Conference, please consider applying for this award.
To qualify, the study should:
- Have a sound basis in science, theory, and/or practice.
- Increase our understanding of workplace issues faced by LGBT employees.
- Offer practical guidance to organizations seeking to improve the workplace experiences of LGBT employees.
- Extend and broaden our theoretical and/or empirical knowledge of sexual identity in the workplace.
- Represent technical adequacy, including issues of internal validity, external validity, appropriate methodology, appropriate statistical analyses, comprehensiveness of review (if the publication is a literature review, and/or theoretical rigor and soundness.
The award includes a plaque presented at SIOP’s opening ceremony, a $500 award, and a feature on SIOP’s website .
To apply for the award, all you have to do is check the “LGBT Award” box when submitting for the conference.
In 2013, the award was given to “Enhancing Diversity Training: Framing, Method, and Individual Difference Effects” by Alex Lindsey, Noah Levine, Eden King, and Mikki Hebl. Their field experiment sought to examine the focus of training (racial differences vs. LGBT individuals) as a determinant of diversity training effectiveness. They found that a focus on LGBT individuals leads to less prejudice and more supportive behaviors toward this group, even when these outcomes are measured eight months after the training has taken place. However, individuals in the race-focused training actually displayed less supportive behavior towards African Americans when compared to individuals who participated in the LGBT-focused training.
