Let’s Build a House in New Orleans!

If every SIOP member donates $20, we can build a house in New Orleans! Because of the economy, it’s been another tough year for New Orleans residents with problems of blight still remaining, particularly for those living in low-income districts. Beginning with the New Orleans conference in 2009, SIOP has been coordinating volunteer activities to contribute to the communities we visit each year.  We continue to raise money for Make It Right in New Orleans, a project to build homes for those who lost theirs during Hurricane Katrina.  We have a team-sponsored home: The House That SIOP Built.  Thus far we have raised over $25,000 toward the $100,000 needed.

You can donate to the SIOP team house by clicking HERE:

• Click on “Donate”
• Click on “Request a Team Home” on the right side of the page
• Click on “Find a Team/Participant” on the left side of the page
• Type in SIOP in the search field and click on “Search”

LGBT Ad Hoc Committee Outreach Project in Chicago

Our committee decided to leverage the talents and skills we possess in I-O psychology within the community. This year, we will work with The Night Ministry (http://www.thenightministry.org/), which connects with Chicago’s vulnerable youth and adults through street outreach, youth shelter, and supportive services. The youth are 14 to 21 years old. Many have not applied for a job before, so they need guidance on resume writing, interview etiquette, social media best practices, and how to pursue and finance a college education.

We will offer this youth group an interactive session on the above topics, with smaller individual coaching stations.

The outreach program will take place on Saturday afternoon, April 16, from 1 to 4 pm. Volunteers are still needed to help provide one-on-one coaching sessions on a variety of topics (e.g., one-on-one resume review, mock interview, etc.).

To volunteer, contact Brian Roote at brianroote@gmail.com, (Chair-elect, LGBT Ad-Hoc Committee).
