Come to the 9th Annual SIOP Practitioner Speed Mentoring Event!

SIOP welcomes interested practitioners and students to participate as protégés and interact with an accomplished panel of mentors at the ninth annual Speed Mentoring event taking place on Friday, April 20, from 5:30-7pm in the Superior A room of the Sheraton Grand Chicago.

To participate in a practitioner topic, you must be a SIOP professional Member engaged in professional practitioner activities. About 15 spots are also available for students who are either ABD or in the second year of a terminal Master’s program.

About Speed Mentoring

  • Participants will have the opportunity to participate as protégés in two 30-minute roundtable topic-driven discussions guided by experienced mentors in the topic area.
  • Topics to be discussed are provided below. Note: student participants will automatically be assigned to specially designed topics geared towards upcoming graduates.

How to Participate

    • Spots are limited and are only available on first come, first served basis! If you would like to participate as a protégé, please sign up here!
    • Registration will remain open through March 16
    • You will receive an email confirmation of your participation once all slots have been filled and registration has closed.
    • We will do our best to align protégés to their topics of greatest interest. However, topics will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

List of Topics

For Practitioners

1. Future Leaders and High Potentials: Best practices and future trends in identifying, assessing, developing and evaluating leadership/high potential talent.  

2. Innovations in Employee Selection: Trends, challenges and technological advancements in employee selection (e.g., EEO implications, high-volume testing, validity, legal defensibility, test security, new technologies, mobile assessment, online assessment center, tying results to development, etc.).

3. HR/Talent Analytics and Big Data: Leveraging workforce metrics, predictive analytics, and big data to inform evidence-based HR decisions; defining, designing, and executing big data studies; how I-O Psychologists can demonstrate business impact and value.

4. Internal vs. External Consulting: Issues, concerns, how-to’s and risks/benefits of switching one’s career path; compare and contrast between internal and external I-O consulting, I-O and HR, and academia and industry.

5. Driving a High Performance Culture: Recent advancements in performance management, especially moving from forced distributions/ranking systems to processes focused on continuous improvement; pros and cons of each approach; implications for application. 


For Students

1. How to Create Your Professional Brand (Student Topic): Crafting your brand and building your reputation; explore the criticality of social media and implications for networking. 

2. Transitioning from Student to Practitioner (Student Topic): Building the non-traditional knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully make the transition from student to professional; aspects of organizational socialization; thoughts on topics you don't learn in graduate school.
