Graduate Hooding Ceremony

Friday, May 16, 2014

4:30 - 5:30 pm

Village Green, Hilton Hawaiian Village

Fee: $10.00

Only participating students should pay this fee. Family and friends of the graduates, faculty, and other attendees need not pay the fee.

As the 2014 SIOP conference falls near or on many university graduation weekends, SIOP is hosting a one-time graduation ceremony to take place on the beautiful grounds of the conference hotel, just a short walk from Waikiki Beach.

SIOP will provide the venue and leis for advisors to “hood” their Ph.D.s. The event will be officiated by a master of ceremonies who will recognize the students in attendance for their accomplishments.  Students graduating with a master’s degree will be acknowledged by name and asked to stand. Students graduating with a Ph.D. will be called to the podium where they will be hooded (with a lei) by their advisor (or another faculty member of their choosing).

Following the ceremony, there will be opportunities for photos for all students, faculty, and family. The venue location should provide a memorable backdrop for the pictures.

The Graduation Ceremony will be held 4:30 to 5:30 PM Friday, May 16. The event will be held at the Village Green, which is surrounded by tropical gardens and gentle waterfalls. It is centrally located near the Tapa Pool and the main lobby.

The ceremony is open to any graduate student attending the conference who received their master’s degree or Ph.D. in the 2013/2014 academic year.  Family and friends are welcome to attend. Seating may be limited depending on the turnout.  In that event, students, faculty, and family will be given priority for seating.

Students must register for the event by May 6. There is a $10 registration fee per graduate and students will be asked to provide an estimate of the number of guests to help with planning. There is no charge for guests.

Prior to the conference, students will be contacted by email to confirm their attendance and, for doctoral students, the name of the person hooding them.
