Viewing Linkage Research through the Lenses of Current Practice and Cutting-Edge Advances

Target Audience: Intermediate; this workshop is targeted toward practitioners who want to learn about basic linkage capability and apply it in their organizations. Graduate training in research methods and statistics as part of an I-O psychology or related degree would be a plus.


This workshop will review best practices and advances in conducting linkage research and managing results in applied settings. It will describe the business questions that best lend themselves to linkage research, its data requirements, appropriate statistical methods, and how to take action on linkage results.

Detailed Description:

This workshop is meant to be a basic primer on linkage research for the I-O practitioner. It will begin by reviewing best practices and advances in conducting linkage research and managing results in applied settings. It will then take attendees on a journey through preparing, conducting, and leveraging results from linkage research.

Preparing will focus on the questions and business, financial, and organizational outcomes that best lend themselves to linkage research, the data requirements for predictors and outcomes in linkage research, and the typical sources for both in organizations. Conducting will detail available statistical methods and how approach to analysis will differ depending on the goal of the linkage research (prediction versus explanation of outcomes) and level at which the outcomes are defined (individual or group). The presenters will illustrate these methods via multiple analyses of real-world data. Leveraging will provide insights into interpreting the results of linkage research and leveraging them into concrete actions. Determining the return on investment (ROI) of interventions based on linkage research results will be a key focus of the leveraging conversation.

This workshop is designed to help participants:

  • Identify outcomes relevant to linkage research that can produce actionable results
  • Identify and obtain data relevant to predict or explain desired organizational, business, or financial outcomes
  • Use data and linkage technology to identify key drivers of the desired outcomes
  • Use data and analysis results to inform the design of interventions to yield positive impact on desired outcomes

Robert E. Gibby, Ph.D., is Senior Manager of HR Research & Analytics for Procter & Gamble, headquartered in Cincinnati, OH. In this role, Robert leads a team of Industrial-Organizational psychologists and HR professionals to deliver operational and strategic workforce planning, HR analytics systems and capability, external selection and assessment, and the annual engagement survey for the Company. Robert joined P&G in 2004 and completed his Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University the same year. Outside P&G, Robert serves as a Board Member for Northern Kentucky University’s Masters of I-O Psychology Program, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses. He is a member of the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology, an editorial board member of the Journal of Personnel Psychology, and actively contributes to the field through board/council memberships, publications, and conferences/speaking engagements.

Rod McCloy, Ph.D., is a Principal Staff Scientist at HumRRO. He has conducted and directed personnel research for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational psychology, with specialization in psychometrics and statistics, from the University of Minnesota and is well versed in several multivariate analytical techniques (e.g., covariance structure analysis, structural equation modeling, event history analysis, hierarchical linear modeling). He has applied these techniques to numerous research questions, especially those involving personnel selection and classification, job performance measurement and modeling, and attrition/turnover. His experience with testing spans both cognitive and non-cognitive domains, and he has provided technical expertise to several large-scale testing programs, including the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), and the General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB). He is active in the academic community, having served as adjunct faculty at both The George Washington University and George Mason University, and currently serving on the Advisory Board for the Masters of I-O Psychology Program at Northern Kentucky University. His recent research has involved unproctored, internet-based computerized adaptive testing, development of custom tools for human capital analytics, and application of performance theory to teacher evaluation. He is a Fellow of APA and SIOP.

Dan J. Putka, Ph.D., is a Principal Staff Scientist at HumRRO. His work commonly involves the development and evaluation of selection systems, and the study of personnel issues and policy for the U.S. military. Dan has extensive experience modeling large complex sets of archival organizational data for the purpose of informing practical problems (e.g., identifying precursors of turnover, counterproductive behavior, and job attitudes). In addition to his service to clients, Dan has remained an active member of the scientific community, publishing his research in book chapters, as well as journals such as Organizational Research Methods, the Journal of Applied Psychology, and SIOP’s I-O Perspectives, and serving on the editorial board of Organizational Research Methods and Military Psychology. His published research has addressed myriad issues, including reliability estimation, modeling of error in ratings, content-oriented validation, differential prediction, and multimodel inference. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, with a specialization in quantitative methods, from Ohio University.
