Friday Seminar 3: Tools or Toys? Evaluating New Approaches to Pre-Hire Assessment

Friday, April 20, 2018
11:30am – 2:30pm
Huron Room

Ben Hawkes, Shell International

Meredith Coats, George Washington University

New approaches to online assessment challenge the familiar text-based multiple-choice format with methods that incorporate gaming, video, AI, etc. Do these approaches fulfill a promise of improving utility, efficiency, and candidate experience? This seminar provides an overview, demonstration, and critical analysis of methods from a test-user’s POV.

Full Description:

Increasingly, users of pre-hire online assessments have options that go far beyond the traditional text-based multiple-choice format: vendors now offer testing on mobile devices, automated video interviewing, game-based assessment and artificial intelligence-based approaches, to name just a few. This seminar will present a critical evaluation of these new and emerging pre-hire assessment techniques. This evaluation will consider empirical research, benefits, risks, and the practical challenges of deploying such assessments within an organization. In addition, useful staffing insights and knowledge will be presented to attendees who may be considering adopting these techniques in their own or client organizations and to attendees who share an interest in developments in pre-hire assessment.

Intended Audience:

This session is intended for a general audience at a post-graduate level and it is appropriate for I-O psychologists and HR practitioners with an involvement or interest in pre-hire assessment. No specific content knowledge is required.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe a range of new approaches to online assessment
  • Explain the extent of empirical research into new approaches to pre-hire assessment and what else needs to be done
  • Identify advantages, disadvantages and risks of the new approaches
  • Assess the evidence-based best practices of using these new approaches in recruitment
