All-New Individual Leadership Assessment Course These courses represent Modules 1 and 2 in a pilot effort that will lead to a full six-module course on Individual Leadership Assessment, if there is sufficient member interest.

 

Individual Leadership Assessment, Module 1: An Overview for Experienced Assessors (8:30am – 12:00pm)

Abstract:

Individual Leadership Assessment is a core I-O consulting practice. This session provides an overview of current leadership assessment practices and an opportunity for experienced assessors to advance their own assessment skills as well as practice and learn from highly experienced assessors.

Full Description:

This Assessment Course (Module 1) provides an overview of Individual Leadership Assessment practices and is designed to help current assessors improve their assessment skills and practice. The session will review a range of individual assessment issues and practices, including identifying relevant job levels, dimensions and competencies; designing a leadership assessment process; and identifying and using assessment tools and techniques. In addition, we will discuss how to manage the assessment process, provide useful feedback, link assessment to leadership development actions, and foster participant engagement. The course leaders each have 30+ years of experience in conducting Individual Leadership Assessments.

Intended Audience:

Advanced/Intermediate: Participants should have a solid understanding of and experience with assessment concepts, processes and tools. The course is intended for I-O psychologists and SIOP members with leadership assessment experience and who are or may be eligible for psychologist licensing.

Presenter Biographies:

Dr. Rob Silzer is Managing Director of HR Assessment and Development, Inc. and Doctoral Faculty in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Baruch, Graduate Center, CUNY. He has consulted with business leaders in over 150 organizations, focusing on executive/leadership assessment, identification, selection, coaching and development; high potential talent; and strategic talent management. He currently serves as SIOP Practice Officer. Rob was awarded the 2015 SIOP Distinguished Professional Contributions Award and the 2016 International Award for Excellence in Consultation by the Society of Consulting Psychology (APA Div. 13). He has been elected a Fellow of SIOP, APA, APS, and SCP (Div. 13). He has served on the editorial boards of Personnel Psychology, I-O Psychology Journal, Organizational Dynamics and TIP, and has delivered 18 professional workshops at SIOP, APA, and Metro-New York. Rob originated the first SIOP Leading Edge Consortium and will Co-Chair the 2018 LEC on High Potential Leadership Talent. He has authored 15 book chapters and edited three SIOP Professional Practice books including Strategy-Driven Talent Management, The 21st Century Executive, and Individual Psychological Assessment. Dr. Silzer holds a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota. He actively pursues adventure travel around the world including high altitude mountain trekking and lives in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City.

Dr. Sandra Davis is Chair of MDA Leadership Consulting in Minneapolis, a firm she co-founded in 1981. Sandra is a nationally regarded thought leader and results-oriented practitioner of leadership assessment and development who focuses her consulting with boards and C-suite leaders. Her expertise and interests are in CEO succession, board evaluation and effectiveness, senior leader succession planning, and executive assessment. Sandra has a long history of assessment experience, including assessment center design, expertise in the use of the California Psychological Inventory and the Hogans. Her chapters on assessment in SIOP publications and her previous involvement in SIOP pre-conference workshops on assessment attest to her passion for excellence in assessment practices. Sandra earned her Ph.D. in counseling psychology with an emphasis in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Minnesota. In 2012, she was named a Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Most recently, she served as Chair for the 2017 13th Leading Edge Consortium on Executive Coaching. She has authored numerous chapters and articles for SIOP publications and published the books, Pearls of Leadership Wisdom: Volumes I and II.

A business consulting psychologist, Dr. Vicki Vandaveer helps leaders and their organizations, excel in today’s fast-paced, increasingly complex and uncertain world. Her primary areas of expertise include advisor to management (people, performance and change), personal leadership development advising/coaching, individual assessment for development or selection/promotion, and organizational assessment and consultation. Her clients are primarily in oil and gas; energy services; engineering and construction; consumer products; academic medical centers; and professional services firms. Mentored in individual assessment by Dr. Dick Jeanneret, Vicki’s assessment experience includes (a) responsibility for all selection / promotion procedures as Manager of Personnel Research & Development for Southwestern Bell (1985-90), including the Management Assessment Center; (b) consultant selection and oversight for individual assessment for leader selection; (c) conducting individual assessments for selection, promotion and/or development as an external consultant (1990 - present). A Fellow of APA and Divisions 13 and 14, Vicki holds a Ph.D. Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Houston. As Chair of APA’s College of Professional Psychology (1995-98), she led the development of an assessment and certification process for treatment of substance use disorders. She served three terms as Member of the Board of Examiners - U.S. State Department Foreign Service (1995-2004), helping to update the assessment procedures for selection of Foreign Service Officers; and she was a Member of the Board on Testing and Assessment for the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council (1995-2001).

In addition, related assessment practices will be reviewed including how to design and follow an interview outline, how to abstract, summarize and integrate assessment interview data and how to leverage the assessment interview process to engage participants. It is designed to help current assessors improve their assessment interviewing skills and practice. Dr. John Fulkerson is a Consulting Psychologist who has more than 46 years of experience inside organizations and as a consultant. He is a graduate of Texas A&M and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Baylor University. After graduating from Baylor, he joined the CIA during the Viet Nam era where he served on the Psychological Services Staff. Since that time, he has served as a Senior Corporate Organization Development Officer for PepsiCo, Cisco Systems, Kmart, The Young Presidents Organization, Y&R Advertising, and Southwest Bancshares. For the last 17 years, John has provided consulting services across a wide range of practice areas and organization levels that range from Boards to teams to organizations to individual interventions. He has been a consultant for a wide range of international and US based organizations. In 2017, the Division of Consulting Psychology and RHR International recognized him for Excellence in Consulting. John describes himself as a consulting psychologist who focuses on applying the science of our profession and his practical experience to assist clients in successfully addressing the challenges they face.

Dr. Andrea Hunt is an organizational psychologist specializing in the selection and development of leaders. A prime interest is in refining the methodology of interviewing experienced and sophisticated executives to gain additional knowledge beyond prepared conversation. Her consulting firm is based in New York. She received her doctorate in Counseling/Clinical Psychology from The University of Minnesota and is a Licensed Psychologist. During her career, Andrea has been involved in large-scale assessment initiatives involving work in adjacent areas such as job analysis, behavioral interviewing, succession planning, career development and executive coaching. She has expertise with tests, simulations, and surveys, and has specialized in writing assessment simulations and international work. Andrea has been employed in varied environments such as corporations and consulting firms, and in different industries, e.g., financial services, manufacturing, consumer products, and utilities.
