Organizational Support for Innovation: The Influence of Leadership and Planning

Innovative efforts occur in an organizational context. Two variables that appear to exert significant effects on innovation are leader behavior and leader planning activities. In the present effort, the central findings emerging from studies of leader influences on innovation are examined. It is argued that leaders must both direct and support through clear definition of missions. Leaders must also evaluate and plan for creative efforts allocating resources as is appropriate. Models of how leaders direct and plan for creative efforts will be presented.
