What sparked your interest in I-O psychology?
My interest in I-O psychology began with interest in developmental psychology and work with kids in undergrad. However, after taking intro to I-O psychology I realized this would be a better career path for me. The alignment of both helping people and business and it can be much more technical (“I” side) and less clinical which I love to be able to show how we can make an impact with data.
What role do you see I-O psychology playing in the future of work?
In the near term, artificial intelligence (AI) can support product development and streamline more menial or repetitive tasks, which gives people more time to focus on higher-value work like judgment, relationship building, problem solving, and strategy. For example, AI can help summarize interviews, draft job content, identify patterns in employee feedback, support assessment development, and speed up data analysis. Over time, I think AI will become more fully integrated into how we work, so I-O psychologists will be critical in making sure these tools improve effectiveness without sacrificing fairness, validity, employee experience, or sound decision making.
What work trends are you seeing and hearing about, and how can I-O psychology practitioners, educators, and students impact these trends?
Organizations want faster/better/cheaper; quicker hiring, better prediction of performance and retention, and stronger alignment between talent strategy and business results. I-O psychology can shape this trend by continuing to improve quality, translating research into practical tools, and helping leaders understand that speed and rigor do not have to be at odds. We also have an opportunity to influence how organizations think about AI, skills-based hiring, and employee experience in a more thoughtful and responsible way.
What advice would you give to students or those early in their careers?
Don’t lose sight of the science behind what we do but learn how to communicate it in a way that business leaders can understand and act on. Technical skills are critical no matter what sub-specialty you gravitate towards. But again, I will emphasize the ability to translate research/analytics into practical recommendations. I would also encourage early practitioners to stay curious, ask good questions, and look for opportunities to solve real problems, because that is where the field becomes especially meaningful.
What is one of your favorite SIOP Annual Conference memories/highlights?
I love seeing all of my friends from grad school and catching up every year.
Please share one non-I-O-related bit of information about yourself.
I love to cook. Food is my hobby and I balance this will a good amount of exercise. I enter at least one charity BBQ competition every year.
