Prosocial I-O psychology broadly refers to volunteer or supplementary work that applies research, methodologies, and practice. These efforts often benefit others and/or society as a whole in exchange for little or no compensation. It may also include psychologists whose career is dedicated to helping others.
Activities related to prosocial I-O psychology can be broadly applied to different contexts. For example, psychologists may focus on applying I-O psychology to urgent issues such as poverty reduction, natural disasters, and environmental sustainability. Some may also consult with nonprofits to improve the effectiveness of organizations that have charitable missions. Prosocial I-O psychology can also exist in the for-profit sector when assisting organizations in improving workers’ experiences, corporate social responsibility, or corporate volunteerism.
