Derrick Carpenter is Senior Director of Product Science on the Labs team at BetterUp, where he leads product strategy at the intersection of behavioral science and artificial intelligence. His work includes BetterUp’s development of Performance Intelligence, a system that turns the unstructured language of coaching conversations into measurable signal, leveraging AI to detect and ultimately predict shifts in resilience, engagement, and leadership performance long before they show up in a survey. His work spans internal product strategy, client-facing consulting, and applied research, translating evidence-based approaches to high-performance leadership into AI-enabled products for enterprise clients.

Prior to BetterUp, Derrick was a product VP at Happify Health, where he led the development of the first FDA-recognized digital therapeutic for depression and anxiety, an AI-driven solution that has delivered over 2.1 million therapeutic interventions. He has also served as a primary instructor for the Penn Resilience Program, delivering evidence-based resilience training for organizations including the U.S. Army and the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, and as lead facilitator for Susan Cain’s Quiet Leadership Institute, teaching assessment-informed strategies on personality and leadership to organizations including NASA, Morgan Stanley, and General Electric.

Derrick holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a degree in mathematics from MIT.
