Fred Oswald is a professor in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine. His research, grants, and publications involve school-to-work transitions and understanding, defining, and psychometrically evaluating the individual differences that affect student and employee success (e.g., knowledge, personality, interests). In this context, he also researches the use of AI in the education and work contexts (e.g., large language models and other machine learning algorithms). Recent leadership positions include being chair of the Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) at the National Academy of Sciences (2020-25), member of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC, 2022-25) as an adviser to the White House, and member of the Standards Management Committee (2021-present). He was former chair of the APA Board of Scientific Affairs, chair of the APA Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessment, chair of the APA Open Science and Methodology Committee, and president of SIOP (APA Div. 14). His editorial positions include editor in chief of Psychological Methods (2026-present), former associate editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology (2020-25), and eight prior positions. He currently serves on nine journal editorial boards. Dr. Oswald is a Fellow of APA (Div. 5, 8, 14), APS, and SIOP. He earned his PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Minnesota in 1999.
