What sparked your interest in I-O psychology?
A high school course in psychology that mentioned I-O psychology and a lot of bad entry level and not-so-entry level jobs.
What role do you see I-O psychology playing in the future of work?
I’d like to see I-O psychology professionals put the human back into processes now and in the future as it relates to work. Just because technology can do certain tasks doesn’t mean it should be fully relied upon to do so.
What work trends are you seeing and hearing about, and how can I-O psychology practitioners, educators, and students impact these trends?
I think the workplace policies around flexibility and return to office initiatives need to be looked at using the knowledge I-O psychologists have and be driven by data rather than other agendas.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is looking to secure their first role in the field of I-O psychology?
Before you start looking to secure this first role in the I-O psychology field, be willing to volunteer or position yourself and your experiences to mirror the types of KSAs the job you want will be looking for. Essentially, dress your resume / CV, LinkedIn profile, or other job-related materials for the job you want.
What tip can you share with someone who might not know how to network in the field of I-O psychology?
Focus on the quality of your network, not the quantity of it. Are there people that you’ve met that will respond to you quickly, provide salient advice when you need it, or recommend you for something when you’re not in the room? That’s the kind of network you need and want to build. Also, networking is about relationship building – it doesn’t happen in an instant.
What is one of your favorite SIOP Annual Conference memories/highlights?
There are so many! My favorite is the 2019 SIOP Annual Conference. I was ~8 months pregnant with my son. Let’s just say it was visually obvious to me that he enjoyed kicking my name badge during the sessions I attended—A LOT.
Please share one non-I-O-related bit of information about yourself.
I love my pets. JR Sonny Investment (Sonny) is my American Quarter Horse gelding. I bred him, so I’ve had him since before his birth. He lives the most fabulous life of leisure out in Snellville, GA (I’m so jealous). He’s the best resource drain I’ve ever known! Hank “the Tank” is our yellow Labrador. Hank’s top KSA is sleeping through everything.
Is there anything you’d like to add?
My favorite people are members of SIOP. I had to take the opportunity to attend the annual conference in New Orleans because everyone was in one spot. Coming back to the annual conference is like coming home for me.
